Barnett Vs. Cormier Fight of the Year
« on: May 18, 2012, 10:15:28 AM »
Best heavyweight fight this year.

Barnett; the most underrated heavyweight and former champion.

Cormier; better version of Cain Velasquez.  Many call him Fedor 2.0.

Odds:

Josh Barnett -120
Daniel Cormier -110

Winner gets shot at JDS/Mir winner.

Cormier has beaten a gatekeeper in Monson and kind of an unknown quantity in Antonio  Silva (he beat spent fedor and who else?).  Barnett has issues with staying clean and hsan't beaten anyone good in three or four years when he beat Yvel. ( I looked it up)  I'm looking forward to seeing Cormier get tested because I think he could be the man in a year or two...but not sure I see this as fight of the year.

Cormier's win over Silva was huge.  The way he beat him was impressive.

Silva had wins over:

Fedor
Arlovski
Ricco Rodriguez
Tom Erikson

Barnett's win over Sergei was huge.  Barnett is also proving his standup is vastly underrated because of he was outstriking Sergei and Rizzo.

Barnett's first fight with Nogueria is still the best heavyweight fight ever.

FULL FIGHT (*GREATEST HW FIGHT EVER*)

Die hard boxing fan myself, but this was a very entertaining card from top to bottom.  Main event was very compelling.  For my money, Strikeforce blows UFC out of the water.  Almost every strikeforce card I've seen delivers whereas most UFC cards disappoint.  This heavyweight tournament was a great idea.  I only hope they strike while the iron is hot and start up a new one ASAP.

I'm not sure about it being the fight of the year, but I do think Cormier was very impressive and dominated every single round during the match.

Barnett is clearly done.  To me it looked like a slaughter, whereby Barnett's height and reach advantage all went to shit as Cormier was out striking him and slamming him to the ground like a rag doll.

Cormier destroyed him in every possible way and due to such, I found the fight to be very one-sided.  I'd love to see how well Cormier would do against seasoned strikers with slightly better hands the likes of Cain Velazquez or Dos Santos, I'm sure those would be great matches.

Did you guys check out Melendez versus Thompson?  I thought that fight was more impressive with it going towards a split decision and both fighter putting up a pretty impressive match.

They need to just put Strikeforce out of it's misery, and absorb the best fighters into the UFC.

A work in prorgess- Strikeforce no longer has ANY heavyweights. Last night's fight was the final Heavyweight "anything" you will see under the Strikeforce brand. Made good sense- UFC was thin in the Heavies and now they are not.

It's about damn time.  Guys like Bigfoot, Barnett, and Cormier will make for very interesting matchups in the future.
