I don't want to make fun of the mans death - at the same time, being interested in the whole "whats it like to life of the land" type of thing like every man these days I can testify that its probably not a good idea to go out and do the full blown thing straight away.

Hiked all of pennsylvania on the appalachian trail.  Its just like you said op.  First time i went i brought like 60 lbs o shi with me.  The last time it was really really stripped down and only the essentials.  First time i went, knew almost nothing.  

Cool i would love todo that - Wicklow mountains are good I mean I can easily camp out there and don't see anybody for a few days, but it still doesn't compare to the "real" wilderness in Canada or US.

Hypothermia is some fucked up shit, very deadly. I spend a lot of time doing solo stuff in the forest but I always stick to basics (shelter, water, food) and never try to be some kind of hero. It is a wild feeling knowing you are miles or days from assistance if something goes bad, helps me keep from taking stupid chances.

I agree with the suicide. No one leaves a note when they go hiking in the wilderness. I doubt anyone REALLY thinks they are going to die when they go out camping like that.

Appalachian trail in Pennsylvania is really awesome.  I crosses multiple state parks and also a lot of state forests, where you can have huge fires if you want and also the land is used for hunters.  The last time i went my buddies and i just got into this tree line and as we passed this tree a little ways we looked back and a guy was climbung down from a tree stand.  He peobably had us in his sites as we walked toards him...creepy.  But it is fuckin awesome man.  There a way more challenging sections of the AT.  But PA is a great place to start.  There are also shleters periodically along the trail with potable water sources. 

From what I've heard some people hike the Appalachian Trail all the way from Maine to Georgia.  That would be so badass.
