UCLA defends athletic scholarship for Sean 'Diddy' Combs' son

Justin Combs hasn't donned a Bruin jersey yet but he's already making headlines.

The 18-year-old son of hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs has been awarded a full athletic scholarship to play football at UCLA beginning this fall, university spokesman Ricardo Vazquez confirmed. As news of the scholarship spread, some questioned if the cash-strapped school's money should be used to fund the education of the son of a man worth $475 million.

"Should P. Diddy's son return $54,000 college scholarship?" a CNN segment asked.

Vazquez said UCLA has a "robust financial aid program," and said the money used for merit-based athletic scholarships was "entirely funded by Athletic Department ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and private donations" and "do not rely on state funds."

The money used for Combs' scholarship wouldn't affect need-based scholarships awarded to other students, he said.

"There is a big separation between financial aid based on need and how that’s funded and how athletic scholarships are funded and awarded to students," Vazquez said.

Combs' scholarship is one of about 285 the university awards to student athletes each year, Vazquez said, and will be used to pay tuition and fees along with room and board.

"Unlike need-based scholarships, athletic scholarships are awarded to students strictly on the basis of their athletic and academic ability, and not on a student's financial need," Vazquez said in a statement.

A recent alumnus of New Rochelle Iona Prep in New York — who reportedly graduated with a 3.75 GPA — the 5-foot-9, 170-pound defensive back was also offered scholarships by Illinois, Virginia and Wyoming. Combs announced in November he would attend UCLA.

“Playing Division I football was a lifelong dream of mine, and through hard work I was able to achieve it,” Combs said in a statement announcing his decision.

"As a parent, this is one of the proudest moments of my life," Sean Combs said in a statement. "This is everything a father could want in his son, for him to excel at what he loves to do."

Many Bruin fans rallied around the incoming freshman on football message boards this week.

"Clearly Justin earned his scholarship.... He doesn’t need to give it to anyone," read a message on Bruins Nation. "The best way he can 'give back' is by being and exemplary Bruin ... and his track record indicates he will be."

Should kids from ultra-wealthy families get college scholarships?

Over the weekend CNN broke news that Justin Combs scored a merit-based $54,000 scholarship from UCLA. The son of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs was a talented high school football star and studied like crazy, finishing school with a 3.75 GPA. Now one of California’s best colleges is rewarding him with a spot on its football team and a sweet sum of money.

Some are saying this ultra-wealthy family should refuse the scholarship money from a state institution. Diddy is worth $550 million and he soared at the top of Forbes recent top-five list of wealthiest hip-hop artists. To him, $54,000 is chump change. After all, Diddy did buy Justin a $360,000 Maybach for his 16th birthday a few years ago.

Wouldn’t the scholarship money be better spent on a kid whose family is struggling to pay for college?

But some think Justin deserves the scholarship. This isn’t financial aid. It’s not a needs-based scholarship; it’s a merit-based one. He earned the money through hard work. Over at Cafe Mom’s The Stir Jeanne Sager argues, “If kids like Justin Combs have to give back their scholarship money, and their parents are made to pay their tuition…What does that say to a child who worked hard to get good grades and excel on the field? It tells them there is no reason to have a work ethic. Because whatever you do, you’re judged not on your accomplishments but the size of your parents’ wallet.” Sager has a point.

No matter, I have a hunch that UCLA will end up benefiting financially from having a Combs on campus. When P. Diddy gave his son a $10,000 check for his birthday one year, Justin sent the money to Haiti.

I'm not a fan of diddy, but if his kid earned it by great play on the field and a 3.75, he deserves it.  I can think of alot of people who get handouts on the other end of the spectrum who deserve it a lot less.

i'm quite certain that the donations from P Diddy over the next 4 years will more than make up for the $54,000 scholarship.

Was gonna say the same thing. Maybe Mr. Diddy will endow a chair, or put his name on a building?

The Puff Daddy library? The P. Diddy Observatory?

So many possibilities.

What's the issue here?  If he earned an athletic scholarship, good for him.  UCLA will more than make their money back if this kid is a star in a revenue producing sport like football.

it's as fake as the scholarship lil romeo got to usc via rose's endorsement.  at 5'9", unless he is LSU's honey badger, he will pine for 4 yrs or leave like romeo did.  anyway, we'll see if he makes some money for the team.

Just based on that news article that was published, UCLA probably raked in about half of his tuition already!

I went to the same high school Iona Prep that Diddy Jr. Did.   when I was there it was 85 percent Dago and micks from Yonkers and Mt Vernon.

they have made it harder over the years.    But diddys son is legit football player.

But do they really need to, no. Does this Combs kid need a schlorship, no. Personel choice. SS was intended to help those who could not afford to help themselves in old age. It has turned into something entirely different.
