Need to add mass - is my diet ok? Advice required please!
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:54:37 AM »
My diet is (training days):

Meal 1: 4 pieces of wholemeal toast and 4 scrambled eggs or shredded wheat with whey & banana, multi vit, Vic C and zinc picolinate

Meal 2: 1 wholemeal bagel peanut butter and whey protein shake - 50gm protein & bagel

Meal 3: Rice, minced beef or chicken, pilau rice, can of pineapple OR tuna/mackerel&tuna w/salad & toasted wholemeal bagel w/low fat Philadelphia cheese, olive oil and banana

Meal 4: Mass gainer shake - 50gm protein, 600 calories
Meal 5: Turkey or Chicken fillet with rice or with pineapple chunks, almonds
Train
Meal 6: PWO shake w/fast carbs - 50gm protein 400 cals

Meal 7: Cottage cheese w/pint of milk or can of tuna or mackerel or 4 egg omelette and raspberry juice
Non training days are the same but without meal 5. I have only been having meal 5 for the last two weeks as I felt I needed to as I’m not gaining weight. I am 41 and have a VERY fast metabolism and do need a lot of sleep....If I’m honest I have never got enough sleep as I am always surfing the net till 11.00-11.30. and I shouldn’t so I’ve started going to bed at 10.30 now. Im 14 stone, 5”7’ and train 4 days a week.

all grain should be eliminated from your diet if you want to be healthy

eat meat, fats and veges and you will grow

grain is for suckers

Dude I don't know what 14 stone is but why don't you let us know how long you've been training seriously for. Cause to be honest if you're 41, been training for a while and looking to add a respectable amount of muscle you will need some of the good supplements....won't matter how many cans of tuna and chicken breasts you stuff down your throat.

Training since 1999 BUT....for 8 years I worked 60 hours a week and my diet and training went to shit, very inconsistent, had depression on & off blah blah....now for the last year Im back to 45 hours a week and for the last year Ive enjoyed my training again and Ive got my enthusiasm back for the gym.

Dude....we all get depressed from time to time, its normal!

No sense in hitting yourself over the head for shit that happened in the past. You're 41 now...you got a shit load of knowledge you didn't have back when you were 25 and to me,,, it should make you a better and stronger person. Man....I'm 30 now and never thought I'd make it this far. You got 10 years on me!!

You've likely had way more experiences than I've had in those "extra" 10 years....fuck....... I hope!!

Ask yourself....what is it that you want and what are you willing to do for it?

You really wanna get bigger??? Is this what you're really looking for???

If so ....I advise some HRT.

Why??

Cause you've been at this for a while......its not gonna magically happen naturally.

Good post, but if I now finally get my diet right some weight gain should follow right? The diet Ive listed here blows away my old diet's from the past which were all over the place

Dude if you're 41, the only way you will gain some muscle is 250mg testosterone into your glute every week.

For starters once a week is more than enough.

The diet that you wrote there is good to make you fat though, if that is okay with you.

1000 kals only with shakes....  ::) ::)
Philadelphia cheese....  ::) ::)

Don't become so consumed in your quest for "mass" that you forcefeed yourself "junk" calories (processed carbs, etc.). You mention having a fast metabolism, but many people would gain sloppy weight with a lot of the foods you listed above. I don't know how long you've been using this diet/training routine, but remember that - even if everything is in check - muscle growth takes time. There's a limit to how much & how fast you can grow, and there comes a point where no additional training or calories will benefit you. Keep an eye on the type of weight you're gaining over the coming weeks and months. It may be necessary to alter your diet to contain more protein & less carbs and/or even just fewer total calories.

That said...

It's not unheard of for trainers to make muscle gains into their mid-40's, but those gains will likely pale in comparison to what you could have accomplished in your late-teens; expect slower and less dramatic results. Don't let that put you off, though. Body habitus can still be changed at "more advanced" stages in life.

There are exercise and supplement protocols that will facilitate the release of human growth hormone. You may consider focussing on those. Some research has shown that our bodies manufacture hGH even into our 70's. While the conditions under which glandular secretion occurs diminishes, there are steps you can take to stimulate its release.
If you're interested, I can list some methods to increase hGH output. Again, it's not "magic" and will still take time to see results.

Testosterone is another matter. I have to agree with the HRT advice given here, which seems like one of the better options. I've talked to a couple of guys who have undergone professional hormone therapy, and they definitely "feel" it working. The steroid board can offer more input on that topic. You may even wish to do a quick search over there.
Some people have experienced favorable results using over-the-counter DHEA. Individual results vary greatly, though, and it's hard to predict how you will respond - I suspect that explains the wide range in user feedback. I'm not fond of most of the other OTC "test-boosters" on the market.

Well, good for you.

And still, in your case I would just go on HRT and blow up a bit.

Or you go the other route and LEAN out, you will look 10-20lbs BIGGER when you can see your abs clearly. Also bettre for your health.

not bad, is it working for you? But your carbs post workout content is low. I would bring them up to 80.

No offence but this info means nothing without telling us your height and I am assuming you meant 10-11% bodyfat right?, anyway your diet looks great for someone with a fast metabolism, just add more carbs after your workout

Sorry Im 5"7'. I will add a banana to my PWO drink, I don't have that many carbs for my last meal at night because I get too bloated and struggle to sleep.

That was one of the worst things I've ever done. Years ago when I was trying to "bulk" (naturally mind you....what a joke) I made it a point to eat/drink some sort of protein while getting up to use the bathroom. Fast forward 7 years and I am having problems sleeping the whole night without walking over to the fridge and looking for something to eat. I'm not a fat fuck either so don't jump to conclusions....its just an ugly habit I can't get rid of.

From my personal experience I cannot recommend this!

Waste of good sleep.

Sleep > protein in the night.

Just get some casein before bed and you are fine.

Uh, I did not say set the alarm or anything... But if you drink some water before bed with whatever you eat or drink, chances are you will naturally wake up to piss 4-6 hours later. The shake is already in the bottle with the powder. Just add some water, mix and drink.

Casein though is a good option, most can't afford it.

I did not say you set the alarm as well, right? No matter if you train yourself to wake up or set the alarm, you hae a disturbed sleeping pattern.

On the casein, so there are people that can't afford cottage cheese? That is hardcore.
