When they wake up at 7am and eat a hearty breakfast that consists of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and a CAN OF BUDWEISER (my aunt).
A true alky would have opted for just the can of Bud.

Naltrexone for Opiate addiction?
I know they use Naloxone for IV opiate users, but never heard of using Naltrexone.
Naloxone is for OD's, Naltrexone is a partial opioids agonist/antagonist. It stimulates the receptor a bit, so the craving for heroine decreases. It was found out only later that it decreased the relapses of alcoholism too, cause the receptors are partly identical.
For alcoholics the combination with acamprosate and perhaps baclofen. Many topiramate too, especially for older people..

I only prescribe disulfiram (antabus) if the intake is controlled.

They should only prescribe it if the vital organs (liver, kidney, heart) are good enough...then the stuff is only very unpleasant when you relapse (and that's exactly the idea.. :D)..

Ah. Kinda like Buprenorphine? They have been giving out Suboxone (Bup/Naloxone combo) to addicts like candy, the problem being that its almost as bad as Methadone to get off of, only its a partial agonist/antagonist instead of a full agonist.

Still sucks ass to get off. Whats funny, is the pharma company marketing it was saying that since it was both a partial agonist and antagonist, that people would have no withdrawals. Fucking assholes.

We had some success with Suboxone, but it is mostly sucessful for the Pharmaceutical industry, as 95% of all new drugs... :-\

The problem was that they had all the Doctors convinced it was a miracle drug.
When I quit it, I was in withdrawals for 60+ days (acute for at least a month plus)
Heroin withdrawal was over and done with inside of 10 days (Acute within 5)

It was terribad. And the docs kept telling me there is no withdrawals, you must be mistaken, yadda yadda yadda.
I switched docs 4 times until I found one that wasnt taken in by the Pharma marketing bullshit.

By these definitions I used to be alcoholic.  Now I'm just too cheap or broke at times, so I dont buy it as often. Don't like beer much at all anymore- weird- I used to.

I worked in a team called bemoeizorg (hard to translate: interfering with them when they wouldn't come for help themselves, and really don't appreciate it sometimes) for addicts, there you find people at their worst. The diseases and stuff are sometimes comparable to 3rd world. And when you look into the medical files and read about their biography, you understand why they ended up that way.
This contributed to my strong belief that some people just shouldn't be allowed to have children, and that they should get contraceptives by force, if necessary...this is a big thing, especially after the eugenic programs by the nazi's, but I stand by it..

Yes, its a terrible thing to say, but some people just arent fit to become parents.

Some of the other addicts I knew, were never going to quit - I got bad because I was in a bad, wanted to try new things, and it just spiraled out of control.. some of those people had such deep seated mental issues that they literally could not stand to be sober - they needed something to kill their mind, as it was just too painful being in their own head.

(The girl in the above quote was one of them, molested by her step father as a small child, hooking for meth by 11, and it goes on. Sad thing is, she just had a child.)

Most people still think addiction is always a choice, or a curable situation. But in many cases it's a chronic disease, better: a survival mechanism...I like alcohol too, I get drunk sometimes, but if alcohol was invented/discovered today, it definitely wouyld be classified a harddrug, and not allowed..

The term alcoholic is very complicated.

If the amount of negative experiences outnumber the positive ones while consuming alcohol, then you have a problem.

Confusing positive times and negative times is also a good sign you got a problem.

Waking up next to a hot chick, with the smell of pussy all over yourself, but you have no idea what happened after your first drink of the night, might be considered a positive experience by most, but in reality, it's a sign of a problem.

That stuff scares the shit out of me too, which I guess is the point. Naltrexone was great helping with th initial cravings for booze.  Made me lazy as hell for a week or so, but well worth it

It's been said that alcohol has destroyed millions of families. But i'm willing to guess that it's saved more than it's destroyed. I can't imagine living in a world where you had to visit a doctor just to take the edge off.
