Nice old school stuff.

Been my experience that some guy's back away from equipment that doesn't look familiar to them. Takes time to get use to, if at all, I guess.

How long are those bars? If collars always come loose, drill a hole in front of collars for a set pin to slide through. To the extreme, weld a small tack on the collars to the bar. A couple of out members were welders, and help build a lot of our basic equipment.

Coach has backed away from my question...maybe you can answer?

What is the benefit of using this old equipment?

Coach if you ever come to Dublin *don't know why you would - You have to have a look at the Hercules Gym, Weigtlifting club exists since 1935 or so - has equipment from 1835 like a dip bar of some sort - its fucking amazing - best gym ever.

I think what you do is extremly clever, I believe with more and more gyms making life harder for the serious lifters they will come right back to the "hardcore" gyms and as far as I know don't even mind paying a lot more as long as they have like minded people around them.

You need a hot receptionist - some chick that is a nympo and doesn't mind flirting all day long

An essential part of any gym.

I was being nice.  Look back at the top of the thread...no need to be an ass, Joe.

So, tell us, why do you have them in your gym?

Are they seriously for decoration?

The older BB's didn't have a revolving bar, like Olympic bar's now days, so the weight lifted didn't always go smooth and could be awkward at first. They were very stiff, or dead is another term. Some didn't have any knuckling either. The spring of the Olympic bar (a live bar) usually could produce 20 to 30 more lbs on any lift.

Those globes could be shot loaded (don't know about the coaches, in the pics..might be solid cast) and hard to balance, because both sides were not always the same weight. Going with the non revolving bar and uneven weight, they presented a challenge when first using them. Back then all bar/DB's were not always made to any common standard, so different casting could be way off in actual weight. Different bar/DB thickness also. (exercise BB/DB's from China & India are almost never true weight or made that well..though China can make excellent Olympic lifting equipment)

Any advantage to using old style equipment, would be that more focus on the lift is more important and also the technique  (lifting style)  use. Actually it's kind of fun to play around with this old stuff, and it certainly brings new challenges to lifting. Finding, that maybe your not a cool , or strong,as you though you.

no way. Some gyms have shitty ass dumbells that rattle and stuff. They really feel heavier than they are. I picked up a pair of 80's for dumbell shoulder presses when not at my usual gym (part of my warm up) and they felt real heavy.

Take a nice iron grip dumbell, nice solid handle, one piece dumbell and the difference is night and day.

As long as they stay together, they are good to go.

Do you have a source for any of this?

I would like to read further.
