It wasn't real popular when it came out for one reason, but I burnt it up. I can't imagine the volume of pot and chemicals I consumed while listening to that band. Especially 2112.

rush's first album was very rock like

It is a perfect example of heavy rock (to become "heavy metal") of that time, 1974.

Well, you're wrong. Hope this helps.

It does. I always heard from friends who knew him at various Toronto gyms that he was a hobbyist in weight training.

No love for Anvil?

I dig Anvil but the band is nowhere close to being my favourite.

Canada had so many great bands in the 80s and early 90's. I still cant figure out how THE TRAGICALLY HIP never made it big in the us. The usa chose to love the fkn barenaked ladies which had to be the most annoying shit band to come out of canada

Canada doesn't champion its musical artists to any degree.

Four of my all-time fave guitarists are Canucks:

1. Kim Mitchell (SO underrated it's foolish)
2. Ian Crichton (Saga)
3. Jeff Waters (Annihilator)
4. Alex Lifeson (Rush)

triumph had some good tunes and rik emmit played a mean lead,,,,rush early stuff all came together and hit big time with 2112 and then live album all the worlds a stage which took those early songs and beefed them up live culminating with peart's great drum solo on working man,,then few more record's with better production again highliting in nthat group there groundbreaker sales wise moving pictures which is a kid's dream cd in early 80's every song a hit or great hard rock classic again a live album tying in those discs then exit stage left,,,again stellar drum solo yyz,,,,then signals and some heavy synth rock stuff people got a bit bored but a good live album again see a pattern here ,,show of hands is decent but great drum solo again live ,,,,next 10 or so yrs they have gone back to signiture sound and a few more live discs lol,,,,,

I own all of Triumph's records and DVDs, but I must admit, a lot of the group's music hasn't aged well for me. Still like it, of course.

As far as Rik is concerned, I do think he is a gifted guitarist, but I also think his least-impressive attribute is his rock soloing (this is being hyper critical, obviously). Never has blown me away. He is a spectacular acoustic player, nylon or steel string.

All the World's a Stage is my favourite live record. Always will be.

It doesn't matter how great any one drummer is, in whatever style, Buddy Rich has become the only "acceptable" ( ::) ) answer to the question "Who is the greatest drummer of all time?"

His legend has taken on a life of its own.

As far as Peart rating as number one, I can't conceive of any musician, drummer or otherwise, being able to single out one player as definitively being "the best". Certainly scoring as someone's favourite, but the best? ...

How would anyone calculate such a thing? And how can anyone be aware of every drummer out there plying their craft?

It's impossible to quantify.

And do understand I am a HUGE Rush and Peart fan. There can be no denying the man's monster chops and musicianship.

That's very cool.

If you don't mind my asking, how'd the lunch come about? You direct friends, have a mutual friend(s), have been a business partner ... ?

I was riding the coattails of a guitarist that I am very close to, that is all.  Nothing more, nothing less, I'm sure he doesn't remember me.  There was not one word spoke about music....which I found odd.  Fishing, cars, food, wine, and plane delays....that covers it.

John Rutsey has been dead for awhile.  :-\

Neil Peart is perfect as is, as is Geddy and Alex. There is no better band than Rush.....no one even comes close.
Lets not start that shit, lots of great bands, would put Rush in the top 25!

KIM MICHELL???? enlighten me, the only thing I remember about him was that crappy gp for a soda song which sucked donkey cock.

He began in the legendary Max Webster and went solo in the early '80s.

(He was playing proto-shred lines in the mid-'70s when VERY few even had a clue, for ONE thing.)

I can't enlighten you. If you know guitar and listen to each of his Max Webster efforts and solo albums, the experience of doing so will enlighten you.

The man is a master of tone, guitar composition, phrasing, has chops for miles, feel out the wazzu, and a natural attack and facility that clearly frames him as a freakin' WICKED guitarist.

P.S. In the early '80s he opened for Van Halen and peer reverence for his talent had reached Eddie, who made it a point to stand sidestage during Kim's gigs to listen to him play. How's that for an endorsement? Oh, and a certain Paul Gilbert cites him as being one of his all-time greatest influences, as well.

P.P.S. If you think "Go For Soda" sucks balls, well, that's fine. Subjectivity and all that. But to explore his discography if you're a guitar fan is to become a fan of Mr. Mitchell's playing.

Max Webster didn't get enough respect.  Nothing mindblowing, but in the "April Wine" era, they more than held their own.

When I fly into Toronto for my job I liked going to Jeff Healey's Roadhouse.  At the end Jeff got into a Jazz deal and forgot the blues which I thought was a mistake.  He was cool and a very nice guy.

Nothing mindblowing?!

To each his own, I guess.
