My wife and I are looking at ranch land outside of Dallas/FT.Worth so in the back of my mind the 30-30 would be a saddle gun.  I'm wondering if it will have enough knock down power for the wild hogs running rampant in this part of Texas.

Beginner question: Why would anyone buy a lever action/bolt action gun unless it's for collecting?  Wouldn't a semiauto/auto with a big fucking clip be the best choice for killing?

Skip the shield and get the m&p. Great handgun, especially in .40!  fwiw, s&w has a rebate going right now if you're prior military.

I've already got a .40 Glock 23.   This is simply for adding to the collection.  The Shield has an advantage in that it could be a daily work gun.  The 30-30 because it's American cool.
