Doctor says casual sex like 'paddock-mating'
A controversial New Zealand doctor has sparked a furore with the provocative comment that the country's women have replaced lovemaking with paddock-mating.
South Island gynaecologist Dr Albert Makary told a conference on families that too many women were visiting his clinic unable to remember who they had slept with.
His comments were in response to Durex Sex Survey findings that New Zealand women were clocking up higher numbers of sexual partners than their male counterparts.
Dr Makary, originally from Egypt, said this reflected a trend in which lovemaking was "downgraded to paddock-mating", and called for a national campaign against promiscuity.
What was needed was a "nana revolution", which harped back to a time of love, respect, commitment and family, he said.
"We have to stigmatise this behaviour, the same way we stigmatise littering in the street," Dr Makary told the conference in Auckland last week.
But his comments have been met with outrage by an Auckland University sexuality researcher, Dr Pantea Farvid, who said he was promoting a "troubling" double standard.
"Having casual sex doesn't make someone promiscuous," Dr Farvid told the New Zealand Herald.
The researcher, who has studied patterns of casual sex over six years, said women had the right, like men, to seek sex simply for pleasure without being labelled a "slut".
