From all the literature and information given to us via the media, he appears to have never used any cocaine. His supposed drug of choice was marijuana. He would smoke up in order to de-stress.
Why didn't he stop? My opinion is that he got too greedy and allowed all the power and money to overcome his ability to reason and stop while still ahead.
Towards the end, he started to kill his own partners in the cartel and alienated himself to the point where he had neighboring cartels turn on him, the Colombian military elite force and local police force, as well as the US DEA office go after him as well.
No matter who you are, with an entire country (police, military and criminal cartels) and the DEA coming after you, it is only a matter of time.
There was a time that Escobar was (and probably still will go down as) the richest criminal in the world, boasting of wealth in the billions, all the while having the most control of cocaine production in the world.
If he would have stopped once he had made billions and considered venturing into possibly something else, he would still be alive and respected within South America.
I think the man allowed his money, power and influence to produce such a god-complex that it brought about his own demise.
