It was really bad for the wealthy.  You HAD to hide your money or dodge the law, bribe people etc...  If they were on your list though, they were ready and willing to do everything to make a Federal case against you.    Alot of Jewish businessmen were hit hard as a result of lingering Antisemitism within the FBI/IRS.

taxes probably had to be higher back in the day since there were no roads and no development of property. now every thing is developed we have roads, all they need is some maintenance from time to time

even though we have alot more people now, the work for the most part is already done we just have to maintain it

theres less demand for taxes needed to maintaint the USA infrastructure  (thats ignoring the deficit) since all the things paid with taxes are already here


what if we just dont even pay back out debt, and all these countries are pissed and want there money, its not like we cant make anything that the rest of the world imports to us. We dont need them we are pretty darn well off. I dont think these countries will start a war with us because we owe them some money
