ROMNEY NARROWS VP CHOICES; CONDI EMERGES AS FRONTRUNNER
Thu Jul 12 2012 19:30:01 ET

**Exclusive**

Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.

And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!

The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.

MORE

It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.

Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

In recent days, she emailed supporters:

"2012 is perhaps a turning point for the United States."

"The upcoming elections loom as one of the most important in my lifetime," she warned. "I'm very often asked to speak about our current foreign policy and the challenges that lie before us. However, we, as a country, are not going to be able to address any of those international challenges unless we first get our domestic house in order."

Van Jones: Romney Should Pick Condi Rice as VP and 'Watch the Obama Campaign Go Crazy'
Newsbusters ^
Posted on July 12, 2012 11:00:18 PM EDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

When the Roundtable discussion on ABC's This Week Sunday predictably turned to who Mitt Romney should pick as his running mate if he seals the Republican presidential nomination, former Obama green jobs czar Van Jones made an interesting observation.

"You want to do something bold, put Condoleezza Rice on the ticket and watch the Obama campaign go crazy" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Condi hasn't moved into the lead.   No, it's just like the GOp presidential primaries.

Rather, this is the result of people realizing Crist is too angry/unprofessional, and Rubio is too young/inexperienced.

So Condi is the flavor of the week.  The REALITY is that she would be HORRIBLE with moderates.  I mean, HORRIBLE.  She's a constant reminder that "I was in the room leading us into iraq, ignoring crucial 911 intel, etc".

Sorry, dont be stupid people - what we will CONTINUE to see is romney PANDERING to the parts of the base (flirting publicly with Rubio to get hispanic support, flirting publicly in coordination with Drudge to flirt with Condi to suck up to the neocon base, etc).

Next week, he will be flirting with the next NON-candidate, perhaps having tea with bachmann to wrap up the religious, batshit-crazy vote before sucking up to the absolute-brainless vote by letting Palin interview him before... drum roll please... selecting a quiet, calm, professional and prepared statesman like Portman as his veep.

He's not going to ruin his (dwindling) chances by choosing an ugly (literally) reminder of Bush's folly.  Will not happen, derp.

You don't think that she is tainted as part of the traitorous Bush White House?

I'm serious, I know it really doesn't matter anyway but I can see this DEFINITELY turning people off.

Lets get Rumsfeld in their again too?

Lol!!!!

laugh, but you know i'm right.  No way she's the choice.  It's nothing more than a circle-jerk for far-right neocons who are nostalgic for the Bush years.

The reality is that she's a nonstop reminder that she, Bush, and Rumsfeld were all in the room when that 911 memo arrived in the middle of the night, sirens blaring, handed to them from the head of the FBI - and none of them OPENED it.

She's a nonstop reminder of "yes, we believe there are WMD in Iraq".

ANd she's not easy on the eyes, but she is 4 years older.

Stop letting Drudge think for you - they want ratings.  Romney is, if ANYTHING, 1000% safe and over-cautious in everything he's done for the last 8 years.  You think he's suddenly going to be reckless with a wildcard veep choice?  hell no.  Stop letting drudge lead you areound by the penis.

so come on - at least dignify my post - do you feel she's "the one" - or do you think it's just the bi-weekly carrot-dangling for small pockets of republica voters to make them feel like they have a voice in things?

Condi as VP would absolutely guarantee I wouldn't vote for Romney.  I don't intend to vote Romney now but havn't ruled it out as impossible.  I'm pissed at Obama bigtime so it's possible.  But Rice would put it out of the question.  Just like the other Bush/neocons Romney is gathering around now... yea fuck that.  I don't feel like being a burnt pancake on both sides and I'll skip the neocon topping.

1. Regarding Rasmussen's indication that Condi has high approval ratings: many potential candidates have high approval ratings before entering a race. Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, and a variety of others had much higher approval ratings while waiting in the wings than when they actually campaigned. After a candidate enters the arena and people get to know them better (and their opponents' ads begin having an effect), they naturally become less popular. In Condi's case the deterioration in popularity will be due to reminders about her time in the Bush Administration.

2. Further, the Rasmussen numbers are almost certainly not representative of the general population, given that Rasmussen consistently over polls Republicans. This isn't a bald assertion: in the 2010 elections Rasmussen consistently overestimated the standing of Republican candidates and produced the least accurate set of polling results ever, including (most famously) a 40 point error in the Hawaiian Senate race.

3. Once Condi gets into the race, the Obama team will easily paint a Romney presidency as a return to neo-conservative principles, especially given that his foreign policy advisory team already comprises a variety of neo-conservatives from the Bush Administration. I'm confident that, given it is largely because of these principles in action that Bush is literally the least popular president since Nixon, and given that Condi's input was integral to most of the foreign policy decisions Bush made, her addition to an already neo-conservative laced team will be a net liability.

4. Finally, if I were a Chicago politician that was willing to do anything to win, I'd use Condi's closeted homosexuality as a wedge issue to cleave more conservative Republicans from the Romney campaign, especially given that they are suspicious of his conservative credentials as is. Obviously, this wouldn't be pointed out in any ads at all associated with the Democratic party or the Obama campaign, including pro-Obama Super PAC ads. Instead, the intel on Condi's relationship with the woman she owns that home with and the credit line they share would conveniently start making the rounds among conservatives at some crucial juncture or other.

This could be enough to freak out a fair-sized contingent of the more conservative wing of the party and thus cost Romney a decent chunk of vote share. In an election that is largely going to be about maximizing one's partisan support rather than attempting to be overly centrist (ala the 2004 campaign), this could be important and ads to Condi's net liability status.

Jindal seems more likely because he is still a minority and the son of immigrants and yet has a bunch of legitimate experience (more than Rubio) and conservative credentials, without any obvious liabilities.

asking 33 to judge VP candidates is like asking a guy fresh out of a 10-year prison bid to judge a beauty contest.

he doesn't care.  Logic, rationality, and any shred of partiality isn't present.  He just wants to pound everything with a hole that is female.

33 is like that - "Anybody but biden".   He lacks the ability to recognize condi is a harsh, rude, ugly reminder of everything WMD/911.

Portman, T-Paw, huntsman would be GREAT VP picks.

Condi would not.

I think a safe pick that simply won't LOSE voters = the best choice.
