On Sunday, senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie claimed that Romney need only release two years of tax returns, in line with the precedent set by former presidential nominees John McCain and John Kerry.
But Kerry actually released 20 years of returns when he challenged President George W. Bush in 2004.

This has been proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, to be false over and over. I honestly don't understand why it keeps getting repeated.
I know I'll get some "Obama said this..." flames for this, but at least there's some contention over other points of debate in the campaign.
From a purely politically strategic standpoint, what is the meaning of it?
