3 miles? not bad.
When i was in jrotc orienteering in high school, I could do a 9 min mile. Which was avg. a lot of purely runners on the team, lucky, i rocked with hell out of the compass and map.  ;)

I have run into a lot of guys that are really out of shape due to a lack of conditioning. Cardio is as important as strength training. Running is a fundamental exercise for any soldier, boxer, wrestler or mma guy. All the strength is the world is useless if you have a small gas tank that will run out.

If you can't run a mile walk fast for 3 to 5 miles five to six days a week. After a couple of weeks of hard walking, running a slow mile should be easy. Then try to run 1 to 3 miles at a time and try not to include walking breaks but use them if needed.

I don't believe in interval work for someone who is severely out of shape and not capable of running a slow mile. When you move from the poor category into a fair category you can include some limited intervals like 6 x 400 meters with walking a 200 meter walking break. 4 x 800 with a 400 meter walking break is better.

What I find disturbing is that a young man can't run a mile. I would see a doctor to make sure you don't have a heart condition.

The problem could also be excessive consumption of whore-pussy.

I'm willing to bet that 1/2 the kids under 18 in America would have trouble running a mile. And 3/4 of all adults in America couldn't run a half mile.

Any tips on how to increase lung capacity? I fucking hate running, it makes my body feel like its gonna die. Anyways no matter how much i train i cannot get past a mile without my wind giving out. Took a pt test today, easily passed all the other tests but failed to complete the 1.5 mile run. My legs felt fine, but my lungs gave out and i couldnt breathe anymore. I hear all these people even old ones talking about how they run 4-5 miles idk if they are full of shit or if theres something faulty in me that prevents me from being able to run distance. Oddly ive always been very good at sprinting..but i can never run longer than a mile without my lungs giving out.

I started running 3-4x a week about 3 months ago instead of doing the elliptical and I was having trouble with a 1.3 mile trail at first. It was more my knees bothering me than my lungs (not that my lungs were great) but I just kept at it and I'm pushing 4 miles now. Mostly just got to suck it up. The biggest change for me was when I forced myself to breathe through my stomach instead of my chest.

This.
Only way to get better at running, is to just run.
Mental toughness is key for this as well, gotta run through the pain.
Unless youre actually dieing sucking wind, then you should probably back off. But most people never reach that point, there is a big difference between being out of breath and actually sucking wind.

Someone earlier mentioned interval training.  It works wonders.

If you are over 215, as another poster mentioned, it can be rough on your skeletal system...I would recommend you do your running on an elliptical machine (easier on the joints).

I know a lot of people are "down" on running, but it does provide a pleasant "high"

I love the elliptical machine(what i used most). But walking/jogging/running is free tho. No gym required

Just keep running. I started out Nd could barley do a 10 minute mile, and that was just one mile. I just started pushing myself, and eventually got up to half marathons. I can run a 8k at a sub 7:30 pace, and that's about it. Running hurts my knees and back, so I  started swimming. Same thing there. At first I could only do a ce w laps before taking a break, now I can swim a half mile in under 30 minutes. Just keep at it bro, shit will gets easier.

Absolutely...although Planet Fitness is only $10/month, and it's not really a gym.   :-X

I hadn't heard of it so I just google'd it.  I got the following from their website's "About" section...

THE CRUNCH PHILOSOPHY

There are no judgments here – No too much or not enough. No glares of disapproval. Here we keep open minds. We are nurturers. We seek only to encourage, empower and entertain. There is no one type. There is no one reason. There is no one way. What we are is a diverse community; what we have is a culture of fun; what there is, is room for everyone: all kinds of people with all kinds of goals who’ve chosen to come reach them with us

Crunch. No Judgments.

Looks like a PF clone.  Gayer than a "fee only" financial planner.

stick with the interval training that i suggested, but maybe just start off with doing only 2 or 3 400 meter intervals for a start, and then gradually build up to where you can do 6 of them

these won't be true intervals in a sense, coz you won't be running them @ 80-95% intensity, more like "light" intervals starting with a light to moderate jogging pace
