The Mark of the Beast

Read this in another post somewhere and was interested if anyone else was familiar with this?

"You are aware that a fragment from the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament, dating to the Third century, gives the more mundane 616 as the mark of the Antichrist, right? And please understand that The Book Of Revelations is a thinly disguised political tract, with the names of those being criticized changed to numbers to protect the authors and early Christians from reprisals."

I don't remember where I got the quote from, but it was from a article about a guy who got fired from his factory job for not wearing the number '666'.  Every worker supposedly wore the number on their uniforms representing the days the factory had been injury free.

As a result he got a 3 day suspension but when he returned he was notified that he had been released.  So now he is suing under the freedom of religion act or something.  The quote was just a discussion question from a reader that I found interesting and had never heard of.

The mark of the beast is not a number, nor a tattoo, or anything else physical. You receive the mark of the beast when you worship the antichrist who has come in the name of Christ. He comes at the 6th trump 6th seal 6th vile hence the NUMBER of the beast being 666.

Not true whatsoever, I am a historian and I have studied every major Manuscript from the Bible, the Apocrypha, The book of Jubilees, The book of Jasher, the Book of Enoch etc etc, you name it and I have read it, never heard of this, furthermore the dead sea scrolls date back older then the third century and manuscripts in the dead sea scrolls clearly state 6 3score and 6, a score is a group of 20, hence 666.

  Christian guy here.

  My favorite minister John Hagee mentioned something interesting in one of his sermons. Hebrew letters also have a numerical value in much the same way that our alphabet does in Roman numerals (i.e. the letter 'V' is equal to five). He said that if you add up the letters in the Antichrist's name according to Hebrew, you'd get the number 666. We'll see.

Too bad the scroll were probably written by a group of drunken, goat-herding, hermits.  Boy did they pull the wool over our eyes  ;D
