Exclusive: Obama authorizes secret U.S. support for Syrian rebels
 Reuters ^ | Wed Aug 1, 2012 5:58pm EDT | Mark Hosenball

President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, U.S. sources familiar with the matter said.

...officials have said that there have been noticeable improvements in the coherence and effectiveness of Syrian rebel groups in the past few weeks ... previously characterized Assad's opponents as a disorganized, almost chaotic, rabble.

'NERVE CENTER'

...[A]long with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Turkey had established a secret base ... in Adana, a city in southern Turkey about 60 miles from the Syrian border, which is also home to Incirlik, a U.S. air base where U.S. military and intelligence agencies maintain a substantial presence.

NBC News reported that the Free Syrian Army had obtained nearly two dozen surface-to-air missiles, weapons that could be used against Assad's ... aircraft. Syrian ... forces have employed such air power more extensively in recent days.

U.S. government sources said they could not confirm the MANPADs deliveries, but could not rule them out either.

... memoranda would have to be signed by Obama to authorize other specific clandestine operations to support Syrian rebels.

OVERT SUPPORT

The State Department said ... the U.S. government had set aside a total of $25 million for "non-lethal" assistance to the Syrian opposition. A U.S. official said that was mostly for communications equipment, including encrypted radios.

Some U.S. lawmakers, such as Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, have criticized Obama for moving too slowly to assist the rebels and have suggested the U.S. government become directly involved in arming Assad's opponents.

While U.S. and allied government experts believe that the Syrian rebels have been making some progress against Assad's forces lately, most believe the conflict ... could go on for years.

I would have never figured Obama would end up being the ultimate wet dream for neoconservatives.  but it's true, he is...

LOL that I was worried McCain would do his best to get us all into WWIII...

Is this another thing that shouldn't have been leaked but was just to shut critics up?

McRINO's Freedom Fighters Line Assad Regime Loyalists Up Against A Wall And Summarily Execute Them While Chanting "Allahu Akbar"

(AFP) - Members of the rebel Free Syrian Army executed regime loyalists in the embattled northern city of Aleppo on Tuesday, according to amateur video posted on YouTube by activists.

The video showed members of the Al-Berri tribe being led into a square filled with armed men, chanting: "The FSA forever!"

The face of one of the captives was covered in blood, and he had been stripped almost naked, as rebels gathered around him and stood him against a wall.

Other captives were lined up next to him, as rebels chanted: "God is greatest."

They opened a torrent of fire on their captives, identified as members of a tribe that entered the fighting on Tuesday in Aleppo on the side of the regime.

Report: Iran Prepares For Attack On Saudi Arabia, Qatar

Iran is preparing for a direct attack on Saudi Arabia should Syria’s Bashar Assad be in danger of falling to rebel forces that the Islamic regime believes are being supported by the Arab kingdom, according to a source within Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Iran also blames the Saudis for unrest in two of its provinces.

“Dozens of Iranian ballistic missiles have been preprogrammed to hit Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia,” the source said. “Qatar will also be hit at the same time as it is directly involved with the events in Syria.”

Iranian officials have increased their verbal attacks recently on Saudi Arabia, seeing the monarchy as behind the unraveling in Syria and the suppression of the Shiite uprising in Bahrain.

“A change of regime in Syria is but a delusion,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in a meeting on Sunday with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al Moallem. Salehi said Iran will fully support the Syrian regime, according to the Keyhan newspaper, which is directly under the supervision of the Iranian supreme leader.

Salehi claimed the Syrian civil war and the push for regime change are being spearheaded by Israel. “It’s surprising that the regional regimes [referring to Saudi Arabia and Qatar] have taken the same position as the Zionist regime,” Salehi said.

I've seen a bunch of videos. One popped up a few weeks ago of rebels throwing a suspected regime collaborator out of a three or four-story window. Seen suicide/non-suicide car bombings of military checkpoints. It's clear as day that foreign jihadists are quite involved with the rebels.

It's kind of ironic considering Assad let them use Syria as a conduit into Iraq for years.

This is shit to be legitimately concerned with.
Sounds like the beginning of another major war. We all know what would happen if Iran fires on the Kingdom, the M1's would start their next thunder run towards Tehran.

I'd rather he use them than let the jihadists raid the depots should he fall.

Shouldn't be surprising. Sunnis and Shiites are mortal enemies. They hate each other almost as much as they hate us and the West.

Not surprising in the least, but it seriously sounds like we're on the cusp of another major conflict.

This is bad news bears all the way around....

Sounds like we're arming a force, that if successful, will kick off a full scale war in the middle east, which we will inevitably be heavily involved with.... and we'd have no one to blame but our leaders.

We need to just stay out of those fucking savages business, they all suck and nothing we do is going to change that.

But really im not surprised, considering how long we seem to have had our sights set on Iran... wouldn't shock me if it was part of the plan all along.

I really don't see what they hope to accomplish by toppling Assad. Are they expecting the Israelis to come in and destroy his chemical weapon stockpiles afterwards? I wholly expect the Sunnis to start purging Christians (like they already have been) should Assad fall.

I mean, if the Sunnis and Shiites want to destroy each other, then all the better for the rest of us. Too bad the rest of the world won't stay out of it. Iran and Saudi Arabia have been fighting a proxy war for a while now so it only makes sense that it will eventually advance past that point.

It's funny, though. Jordan's intelligence service, the GID, which is by far the best in the Middle East outside of Mossad, has said that Al Qaeda and other jihadist groups have infiltrated the rebels and yet no one will acknowledge it.  ::)

There's been a clear uptick in their operational capabilities that almost directly coincides with the time when foreign jihadists started arriving in Syria in earnest.
