Do you know a WWII Vet?
« on: August 01, 2012, 07:59:48 PM »
My husband will be escorting this fall, our friend and neighbor who served.  I wish I could go, but space is very limited.  I returned home last year from a trip at the same time an honor flight was coming in and the crowd at the airport to welcome them home was absolutely incredible.  Very moving.  If you know of anyone who should take advantage of this opportunity, please encourage them to get their application in.  The cost to escort a vet is $500.

See links:

Time is of the Essence

Based on recent 2011 statistics, we are losing World War II veterans at the rate of approximately 900 per day. Honor Flight Network will continue do whatever it takes to fulfill the dreams of our veterans and help our heroes travel absolutely free.

Subsequent to the World War II veterans, our efforts will then focus on our Korean War and then Vietnam War veterans, honoring them similarly. (Note: Some hubs are now accepting applications from Korean and Vietnam Veterans. Please contact your local hub to see if they are accepting these applications.)

http://www.honorflight.org/about/
Honor Flight Network will also pay tribute to America's other heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, followed by veterans of more current wars. They, too, have given so much and it's time we show them that their efforts are not forgotten. Honor Flight Network has learned a lot over these last four years and one point that stands out is that our veteran heroes aren't asking for recognition. It is our position that they deserve it. Our program is just a small token of our appreciation for those that gave so much.

"There's a real sense of urgency,"  "We've got 900 World War II veterans nationally that die every single day... these guys are in their late 80's and 90's.

I had a great uncle that was  a pilot in the RAF, but he`s been dead 14 years.

It`s been 66 years since the war, so the youngest vet is like 83, most are much closer to 90, it`s dam sad the people that have defined the modern western world are almost all gone.

It seems like the VFWs were filled with these guys still raising hell, drinking beer and telling amazing stories back when I was a kid in the 80's.

Now they are passing away at such a prodigious rate. Father time...he never lets up.

My grandpa died in 08.  He was a hell of a guy, went to almost every country in Europe except Luxemburg and Scandanavia.  Great uncle was on a boat in the Pacific, he's still living.  Healthy as hell

My grandmother told me my grandfather always said he was going to take her back to France, but they never made it.

Yes, it's a day trip to D.C.  They leave in the morning and return in the evening.

If you feel moved to help out, I'm sure your local chapter could use volunteers.

Thank you.

I'm a little confused as to why the country he put his life on the Line for won't pay to it.

It is free for vets (all donations).  The chaperone/escort is $500.

My vet put our cat to sleep. It was for it's own good, but I don't feel like going with him to some parade...

Personally, I think that a lot of people would do it just for the honor, but the $500 thing will prevent/detract a lot more from participating.  Before you think this is anti-vet, my late father was a vet of korean war, my brother is retired AF, my late uncle was on one of the more famous battleships of WW2 (I will be damned if I can recall which right now).

A former neighbor, who died a couple of years ago, was in the 101st Airbourne during WWII. Lot of combat action and was in the Battle of the Bulge. First time he ever saw snow was then  (SoCal native). Liked it at first, hated it later. Really cool guy to talk to, though never about what he did in the war.

His grand son joined the 101st Airbourne (Fort Campbel,Ky)l and was killed in the first gulf war. The reason I use 101 after the JPM...giving due respect to a childhood friend.

When i was in elementary school, they brought some old fart with a bar code on his arm to our school library. He was going on about how he survived Hitler's concentration camps.

It is on that day that i realized we must deal with the jewish menace.
