Chad Johnson, a six-time Pro Bowl receiver now with the Miami Dolphins, was arrested Saturday night for domestic violence, according to Davie Police Department Capt. Dale Engle.
Johnson is charged with simple battery, domestic violence, which is a misdemeanor.
Johnson allegedly head-butted his wife, Evelyn Lozada, while they were in a vehicle, Engle said.
The argument started after Johnson and Lozada returned home from dinner and she found a receipt for a box of condoms, a police spokesman said.
"It gets pretty heated," Engle said, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "By the time they get home here in Davie it's pretty heated. She alleges he leaned over and head butted her. He says she leaned towards him and that they butted heads. Needless to say she has a good laceration on her forehead."
Lozada reportedly had lacerations on her forehead and was treated on the scene before being transported to the hospital.
Johnson remained in jail as of late Saturday night, and was likely to be transferred to Broward County Sheriff before midnight. A police spokesman told the Sun-Sentinel that Johnson would not be released until he appears in front of a judge, which could happen as late as Monday morning.

Miami Dolphins team officials were "aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering of relevant information," Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said.
Lozada and Johnson were married less than six weeks ago on the Fourth of July. Their wedding is supposed to be part of a VH1 reality series that begins next month, called Eve & Ocho, the Sun-Sentinel notes.
Lozada also has a role on VH1’s Basketball Wives.
Johnson, 34, was drafted in the second round out of Oregon State in 2001, and made six Pro Bowls for the Bengals. He led the NFL in receiving yards in 2006.
Johnson spent last season in New England, but was unproductive and eventually released.
Johnson was also arrested for a domestic dispute in college, the Sun-Sentinel notes.
