Drinking Age.
« on: August 18, 2012, 07:26:07 PM »
Should it be 18 or 21?

IMO it should be 18.  If you're old enough to die in war, you're old enough to drink.

Absolutely 18.

I asked this question of a senator back when I was like 14 I think and you know his response?

There is no correlation between fighting in a war and drinking alcohol... So 21 is the right age.

What a dickwad.

If you can spill your blood for your country, then your country should let you spill a beer.

I had probably been drinking for 2 or 3 years before turning 21. That being said I also did a lot of stupid shit while drunk(still do but in a safer manner). Its a miracle that myself or any of my friends arent dead, we have had a number of close calls though.

I would be more in favor of raising the age of enlisting then lowering the age for alcohol consumption, if thats your beef.

The senator was correct.  That being said, why should there be an age limit at all?

Has this been a problem for Europe?

yeah.....

Laws didn't stop me from driving drunk as a minor, under age drinking or as a minor contributing to other minors.

Growing up did.

We are certainly a melting pot here.  However, if a parent wants to give his 4 year old alcohol, I don't think a law will stop them.  I also find (from my high school days) that many children who were allowed to have a drink with their family at home, were less prone to binge in high school because drinking was not taboo for them.  A majority of people under the age of 18 have drank (let alone 21) and have been drunk.  An age limit on drinking is silly.

When the age got pushed down to 18.  Remember when Mad was going nuts on congress?  If I remember right, they pushed lowering the drinking age by showing statistics.  What they didn't show you at the time was that the lowest group included a few more years than any other comparison.  So they stacked the numbers to make it look worse.  It's been a while since I looked at it but if I remember right they charted shit out in 3 year segments with the exception of the lowest group, 18 to 23 which includes 2 more years into the stats which inflates the number of fatalities they introduced to congress, not to mention that the lowest group had a much higher population count duh.  With all corrected the higher drinking and driving problems occured around the 30 something range.  It's been a while so I don't recall the exact numbers but this should be close.  It was a joke

I agree with you not detering ppl so much but thats why I added the caveat of impunity.

I think we can all agree that a person giving alcohol to a 4 year should be punished.

Really?

B/c all the parents that let their kids drink, smoke and do drugs are where I went to do those things...

I wasn't' referring to those parents ;D.  I was merely referring to parents that allow their kids have a sip of beer or wine with dinner.  Most (if not all) kids dislike the taste and the mere fact that their parents allow them to have alcohol at home, deters that want for it/taboo factor.

If a 4 year old wants a sip of daddy's drink and is allowed a sip, it will be the last time the 4 year asks for a sip of daddy's drink.

If a parent takes a beer bong and stuffs it into a 4 year old's throat...they should be punished for numerous things.

my issue will be more with the latter, there are idiots that do this now with cigarettes, pot and weed.

If you allow drinking at any age then your saying that we cant really punish them. Parents make their parents drink milk all the time I know mine sure as shit did.

My position is that there should be no age limit on drinking alcohol.  Thus, if a child wants a beer, let him have it.  If a parent forces the child (the latter example) to drink, the parent should be punished on different grounds (just like they would be under the law currently and therefore, you could certainly punish them even if there was no drinking age limit).

You know... a lot of liberal types have said so.

I think they use the: "It's not human milk, so you shouldn't force them to drink animal milk".

I had a buddy one time who took his kid to a "green tea doctor"???

Seriously, don't ask me what the fuck that is, that's what he called her... The "Green Tea Doctor" said, No other animal drinks another animals milk... Why do you let your child?

I really don't even know if I have a point there, but people want to stop people from doing shit ALL the time.

Assholes.

Yes, if for example...the force raises to the level of assault and/or battery.

Conservatives too.  If you watch some of the health shows on the Trinity Broadcasting Network, they say that God wanted you to only drink grassfed unhomogenized whole milk.  Thus, they tell viewers that they should ONLY drink grassfed unhomogenized whole milk.

so forcing a 4 yr old to drink a beer a day would be acceptable to you then?

They are specifying the type of milk, but it's still animal milk.

I do agree with you though... It's not exactly the same, but it's close.

18 - BUT - If you drink and drive, you lose your license for TEN YEARS - no exceptions.
