Charting the impressive growth of Walmart across the United States, a GIF map shows how the family-owned firm progressed from one store in Rogers, Arkansas, to 3,500 stores in the United States alone.

Founded by Sam Walton in 1962, the firm has become the world's largest retailer and it the world's biggest private employer with more than two million members of staff.
 
Headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, the firm generates 51 percent of its $258 billion sales from its grocery business and the Walton family who control 48 percent of the firm are worth a combined $102.7billion.

K-Mart still exists... They were bought by sears and still have stores... They just don't have the stores that Wal-Mart has.

Personally, I hate Wal-Mart and refuse to shop there.

Most people have no conviction.

I liked Walmart back before the SuperCenter... Sam Walton hated the Super Center idea and would not let it exist... It wasn't until his death that his children took over and started opening them.

His original idea was only to have products Made in America sold.  I remember one of the first Wal-Marts in NC had only Made in America goods.  It didn`t last too long.

I have to admit I hated Walmart until I actually shopped there....its an amazing store....however they need to place a moratorium on more stores.....howe?...I don't know ;)

Easily done.  Cities and towns can choose to not let them in.  Where I live this is exactly what they have done.  No new expansion is allowed whatsoever.  Nothing is to be built ever.

I remember those days. The ones near me at the time were actually quite successful with the mix of American and non American goods... Made in America was always highlighted.

Wal-Mart is one of those giant retailers that cut across class lines.They offer low to middle priced clothes, electronics, and other small household goods. They do offer very good prices on miscellaneous common food stuffs and things like cleaning and health products, so you do find regular folks around along with the stereotypes.

They did this here in New York City as well..Walmart is banned from opening even one store period

I liked the cool animated nature of it, seeing the fast rate that the store grew.  An excellent of capitalism - if you want specialized service, you go to a more expensive option and get good service.  At walmart, the lines are long and the service is often incompetent - but prices are cheaper.

I stopped at walmart for 100 bucks worth of healthy food today, got a full cart.  Wore headphones and a big ass fanny pack and gave evryone dirty looks, of course :)

Walmart is banned from Annapolis and other cities in Maryland...they usually are found in the "low rent" areas or the boonies.

The real good thing about them are the 24 hr Walmarts, where at 1am you can pick stuff up---but there are some shady people out at that time.
