Open carry, no. It always seems to upset the sheep. I normally carry a small backpack with all sorts of interesting things in it but I like to leave it in my car.
 If I do carry its a small frame auto IWB at 4 oclock, I also have one of those photographers vests with a nice inside chest pocket that conceals nicely.

I have a concealled license permit to pack a handgun in my state, but I don't pack unless I go out to a bad location at night or a club at night.

I'm glad they don't have concealed carry for  civilians in New Jersey where I live. People are way to aggressive here. There would be shootings at every car accident and every night club. Neighbors would be shooting neighbors over disputes.

There's some sense in your humor.  With the exception of desert island scenarios ("I went to watch Batman and a lunatic shot up the place." when openly carrying a gun would be more of a liability than concealed anyway), 999/1000 confrontations are going to be face to face.  You'd be brawling and rolling around before having time to unholster the gun, even against a drunken lout.  Everyone's first thought is going to be to stop the gun.

Hell, I'd be very inclined to attack a confrontational guy who I knew had a gun rather than give him the space to draw it, whereas if I didn't know he had one I'd just consider him a dickhead and not do a damn thing.  Advertising a weapon makes no sense at all.

I vacation to NC every year, and it amazes me how many shootings are on the news everynight.  Seems like there are plenty of armed robberies going on in the smokies.

Here in Massachusetts it's not illegal but doing so isn't wise becuase if someone calls the police on you they can arrest you for disturbing the peace and revoke your permit based on ' sudibility ' issues. Which is bullshit

Leave the open carry for camping and backpacking.  Concealing definitly gives you the advantage if the shit ever hits the fan.

Carring a gun without concealment is a big risk too. If you have a gun on your hip; the guy 5 feet away from you has one too. Meaning the one on your hip that he could wrestle away from you. Making the decision to shoot is often a split second decision. It will then be talked about  for weeks/months in the news, streets, courts and juries. There will be debate on whether it was the right decision. When they decide what was the right move you could be free and clear, sued; or in jail. You had a split second to decide to pull the trigger.

Everyone has in their mind's eye has the bad guy with a gun and you come to the rescue shooting the bad guy as everyone cheers. Most shootings are never black and white.

 I'm making this up but let me put a couple of scenarios out there.

1. You're sitting in a bar and a drunk says go fuck yourself and get out of the bar. You stand your ground and continue drinking. He walks up to and punches you in the face knocking you down. Can you kill this man?  Can you really say you are in fear for your life? Should you meet him with the same level of force or will that expose your gun that he could use against you?

2. You get into a car accident. You get out of your car and you notice the other driver has a shoulder holster under his suit. Is he legal carrying civilian, cop or criminal? You have your gun too. He says I should kick your ass for ruining my brand new car. He starts walking toward you. Can you take his life?

3.You are watching batman in the movies. A guy comes in with smoke grenades and starts shooting. There is absolute chaos. You pull out your gun and shoot him dead. Amazingly you didn't shoot an innocent movie watcher. People are screaming, it's dark; and people are running all over the place. People are on the ground dead and wounded. You have no idea if there is another shooter. The cops come in with 15 guys and see you with a gun. Do you have time to explain yourself?


I could go on with examples. In rural states like Arizona I can see civilians carrying but in NJ/NY it would cause a lot of deaths.
