Pakistan Christian Homes Torched, Churches Attacked After Jailing Girl

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (BosNewsLife)-- Muslims torched Christian homes and "destroyed" a church in a slum area of Islamabad while suspected militants shot at another church outside Pakistan's capital, after the jailing of a mentally handicapped Christian girl for "blasphemy", witnesses said Tuesday, August 21.

"Our staff and a few [other] Christians went into [Islamabad's] colony of Meherabadi [late Monday local time ]," added Farrukh H. Saif, executive director of Pakistani rights group World Vision In Progress (WVIP).

"We found that five houses were burned and one church was destroyed," he told BosNewsLife. "Bibles [have been torn] to pieces and a [church] cross is broken", the official said.

Elsewhere in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi the Catholic St. Matthew’s Church was "attacked by unknown extremist at 2 a.m. local time," added Saif, citing investigators.

"They opened fire at the Church building which damaged the front of the building," in Karachi's Pehlwan Goth neighborhood, he explained.

MORE TENSIONS

Karachi's WVIP representative in Karachi, Sunny Bernard Gill, said the incident had "created tension and fear among Christians of the Pehlwan Goth" area.

This was not an isolated incident in the neighborhood as "Muslim extremists" have attacked Christian properties and churches twice over the last year, Saif said.

The latest violence came as 11-year-old Rimsha Masih was preparing to spend another night in Adiala jail, a grim facility in Rawalpindi, close to Islamabad.

Police jailed the girl Friday, August 17, after at least hundreds of Muslim protesters demanded that she face charges under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws.

A local cleric had said she burned pages of the Noorani Qaida, a religious textbook used to teach the Koran to children, said Saif.

MENTALLY HANDICAPPED

Masih is thought to be mentally handicapped, but police quoted in some media claimed "she had no mental impairments" and that she may be older.

However Saif told BosNewsLife he is convinced about her young age and stressed she "could not have known she burned the textbook as she can not read."

By Monday night, August 20, as Pakistani Muslims celebrated the feast of Id al-Fitr,  Masih was still in Adiala jail reportedly with her mother,  awaiting their fate.

Muslim mobs have been pressuring the girl’s Christian neighbors and others to flee, Saif and other activists said.

THOUSANDS FLEE

Thousands of Christians were still outside the slum area where the alleged burning incident happened, fearing for their lives, human rights workers said.

There were concerns late Tuesday, August 21, that at least several Christian refugees will have no place to return to, amid reports of burning homes. WVIP said it was distributing food among hundreds of impoverished Christians.

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari said in a statement that he had "taken notice" and ordered the Interior Ministry to investigate arrest of the girl.

Under Pakistan's controversial blasphemy legislation anyone, including apparently minors, can face the death penalty or at least a long prison term for blasphemy against Islam.

On Monday, August 20, Dutch parliamentarians of the ChristianUnie, or'ChristianUnion' party, urged the Netherlands and the European Union to pressure Pakistan to release Rimsha and demand an end to the controversial blasphemy legislation.

The case underscores concerns over thousands of children who rights activists say are languishing in Pakistani jails, often without proper legal representation, or just forgotten by what critics view as a corrupt and bureaucratic judicial system.

It looks like the myth that Geller was pushing some months ago about Muslim hordes incinerating Nigerian Christians is resurfacing once again, this time on Facebook.
A blog by the name of Waffles at Noon covers the re-emergence of the photo:

Pamela is claiming in a blog titled, Nigeria: Muslim Hordes Mass Slaughter Christians that a gruesome picture is evidence of Muslim violence against Christians in Nigeria (be warned the picture is gruesome):

Pamela brags that she wrote about it “first” back on April 19, and then wonders “why” is America fighting in Libya to restore a “universal Caliphate?”

It turns out however that the above picture is not evidence of some “Muslim rampage” in Nigeria! The charred bodies are a tragic result of a tanker explosion in the CONGO!! (Reuters) – At least 230 people were killed when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, unleashing a fire ball that tore through homes and cinemas packed with people watching World Cup soccer.
Officials said on Saturday the explosion late on Friday also injured 196 people, adding that the death toll could rise.
They described scenes of devastation in the town of Sange, where houses were burned and bodies littered the streets. Some people died while trying to steal fuel leaking from the tanker, but most were killed at home or watching World Cup soccer in cinemas.
Many of the bodies were charred beyond recognition.
United Nations helicopters began airlifting injured people to hospital, while Congo’s army, which lost a number of men in the blast, has sent soldiers in to help with the rescue.
“Our latest numbers are 230 dead and 196 injured,” Madnodje Mounoubai, a spokesman for the U.N. mission, said. Congo’s government also gave the same number of dead.

TANKER ACCIDENTS
Roads in the area are notoriously bad after years of war and neglect in the vast central African nation.
“Some people were killed trying to steal the fuel, but most of the deaths were of people who were indoors watching the (World Cup) match,” Cisambo said.
There have been numerous similar accidents across Africa, where crowds gather around fuel tankers involved in crashes, only for the tanker to explode.
Millions of football fans across Africa were watching Ghana, the continent’s last team in the World Cup, play Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday evening.
For many, who have no electricity at home, makeshift cinema halls are the only option for watching the football.
“My children were watching the football match in the cinema and then they ran out to see the petrol,” said Kiza Ruvinira, who lost three children and his sister-in-law in the blast.
“I went out to see what happened and I found my three children’s bodies myself. I don’t know how to go on.”
Mubaya Mumasura also lost three family members: “I don’t know what to do with myself I am so sad. I want the government to assist all the victims and help us.”
Congo’s weak government has difficulty providing even the most basic services, so U.N. peacekeepers began airlifting some of the wounded to nearby hospitals and aid workers were called in to help with medical treatment.
“The national Red Cross is working on collecting the bodies and taking them to the morgue, but the priority is obviously to take the wounded to the hospital,” International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) coordinator Inah Kaloga told Reuters.”
Kaloga said aid workers were trying to identify bodies before they were buried, but many were completely charred.
“It’s a catastrophe,” said Captain Olivier Hamuli,” spokesman for Congo’s military operation in South Kivu, adding that 13 soldiers had been injured and another 10 were missing.
The Kenyan driver of the truck is being held by the police.
Alain Ilunga, deputy CEO of Congo’s storage and distribution company, which is already investigating the incident, said the truck was carrying 49,000 liters of petrol at the time.

The Qur'anic verse, { let there be no compulsion in religion } [fn1] , was the cornerstone of Muslim relations with Christians in religious matters during the time of the second caliph, Omar Ibn al-Khattab . It should be clearly stated that neither Muslim jurists, Muslim chronicles, nor orientalists past or present have provided any example of an incident in which a Christian was forced to embrace Islam. In fact, Muslim history and literature cite a large number of examples confirming freedom of religion at that time. For example, Abu Ubayd, in his book "al-Amwal", cites the story of Caliph Omar  and his personal servant Astiq, a Christian. [fn2] Omar  frequently tried to convince Astiq to embrace Islam, but when he refused, Omar  did nothing except recite the words of the Holy Qur'an, { let there be no compulsion in religion }. [fn3] Astiq says that when Omar  was about to die, he freed Astiq from slavery and told him he could go wherever he wanted. This bears witness to Omar's spirit of tolerance: in spite of his immense power as leader of the Muslim nation, he propagated Islam only in the form of exhortation and persuasion. Beyond that, he made it clear that nobody should be compelled to change his or her religion. This tolerance is evident in the pacts and treaties that Omar  concluded with conquered peoples. [fn4]

A large number of incidents reported in the Muslim juristic and historical literature illustrate Omar's favourable conduct towards dhimmis [fn10]. He was well-known for instructing his army commanders to deal justly with non-Muslims. For example, it was reported that Omar  ( after he was stabbed by a dhimmi ) told his would-be successor: "I commend to the Caliph after me that he conduct good treatment to those who are under the Prophet's protection. He should keep the covenant with them, fight those who are after them, and not tax them beyond their capacity". [fn5] Omar's concern for the well-being of dhimmis was thus shown even on his death bed.

The manner of Omar's treatment of dhimmis was supported by his interpretation of the Qur'anic verse:{ Alms are for the poor and the needy } [fn6] According to Omar , the poor ( "al-fuqara" ) were the Muslims and the needy ( "al-masakin" ) were the dhimmis, including Christians and Jews. Omar's interpretation was promulgated after the following incident reported by Abu Yusuf:

Omar  passed by the door of people at which there was a beggar who was an old blind man. Omar  struck his arm from behind and asked, to which People of the Book do you belong ? He said, I am a Jew. Omar  said: " what has compelled you to begging ? " The Jewish man replied, " I am begging in order to get money to pay for jizyah and my need, as I am old ". Then Omar  held his hand, and took him to his house and gave him something and some money. Omar  then sent him to the Muslim treasurer ( bayt al-mal ). Omar  instructed the treasurer to take care of this man and whoever was like him. Omar  added that with this man we have not done justice to him as we took jizyah from him when he was young but we forsook him when he was old. Verily, the sadaqa is for the poor and destitute. And this one is a destitute from the People of the Book. So Omar  exempted taking the jizyah from him. [fn7]
Finally, Omar  combined words with deeds when he sanctioned blood retaliation ( qisas ) in favour of an Egyptian Coptic man against Muhammad, the son of `Amr Ibn al-`As, ruler of Egypt. Omar  uttered these historic words to `Amr: "O, `Amr, how could you have enslaved the people, when their mothers have born them free". [fn8] This incident occurred when the son of `Amr hit the Coptic man, saying: "I am the son of the honoured people". The Copt reported this to Omar , who did not hesitate to recall Amr and his son from Ehypt, and he told the Copt to hit `Amr's son back". [fn9]

Nigeria: Islamist Gunmen Storm Church, 16 Christians Gunned Down

IT was like a scene from a war film. A crowd of worshippers in a church — perhaps praying, their eyes shut — and suddenly the eerie sounds of guns. Pandemonium. Blood, tears and anguish.

But it was no movie. All was real last night in Okene, Kogi State where unknown gunmen stormed a church and opened fire on worshippers, killing no fewer than 16.

Killed were worshippers of Deeper Life Bible Church opposite the Federal College of Education (FCE). Many were injured.

“We are shocked. It is serious,” a Pastor told The Nation last night.

The gunmen, who were said to be bearing sophisticated weapons, stormed the church during the Bible Study, a Monday programme, at about 7p.m., shooting indiscriminately.

The gunmen reportedly took the worshippers by surprise. They blocked all entrances into the church, preventing people from escaping as they fired indiscriminately at the worshippers.

A source said 15 worshippers died on the spot; one died in the hospital.

Nigeria: Suspected Boko Haram Gunmen Attack Catholic Church, Police Station

Abuja (AGI) — This morning an armed commando attacked a Catholic church and a police station in Damagun. The city lies 30 km from Damaturu, the capital of the Federal State of Yobe, in North-Eastern Nigeria.

The attack, local authorities explained, was fended off by the police forces that had been deployed in the area after a car-bombing attack against a school on Sunday. There are no reports of casualties in the attacks although part of the building hosting the school was destroyed.

Again on Sunday, a raid on an army checkpoint in Kano, the largest city in Northern Nigeria, caused the injury of 2 soldiers. In the past, Kano and the Federal State of Yobe have often been targeted by the Boko Haram Islamic fundamentalist terrorist group.

Nigeria: Christians’ Throats Slit By Boko Haram Islamists, 9 Killed

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria’s army says suspected sect members have gruesomely killed nine builders in a northeastern city.

Spokesman Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said Monday that the assailants cut their victims’ throats in a late Sunday night attack in the city of Maiduguri. He said one man was found Monday still breathing even as he bled from the neck.

The army has blamed the attack on “terrorists,” which is how they often refer to a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram.

Matthew Okoye, a neighbor, said he saw 14 bodies. He said some of the victims were from Nigeria’s predominantly Christian south.

Officials have underreported casualties before for fear of reprisals, especially when attacks involve people of differing religions.

Nigerian Islamists Launch Series Of Raids On Christian Villages, 52 Killed

(ABC News) — Raids and reprisal attacks have left 52 people dead in Christian villages near a Nigerian city where authorities have struggled to contain religious violence, officials said Sunday.

Assailants launched “sophisticated attacks” on several villages near Jos early Saturday, said Mustapha Salisu, spokesman for a special taskforce made up of policemen and soldiers deployed in the area to curb years of violence.

“They came in hundreds,” Salisu said. “Some had (police) uniforms and some even had bulletproof vests.”

He said the special taskforce fought back for hours and lost two policemen in the battle. Salisu initially said that 37 people were killed including 14 civilians and 21 assailants.

However, later in the day, Nigerian Red Cross official Andronicus Adeyemo said aid workers had counted 52 dead and more than 300 displaced people from the attacks. He did not give a breakdown.

Nigerian Christians Targeted By Boko Haram Suicide Car Bomber, Plows Into Church Killing 15

(Telegraph) — At least 15 people were killed and dozens wounded when a suicide car bomber drove into a Nigerian church compound and detonated his explosives as worshippers left an early morning service.

The bomber targeted the Living Faith church, in a neighbourhood near the airport in Bauchi, the capital of northern Bauchi state. The timed blast caught many people outside the church without any cover to protect themselves from the explosion, causing heavy casualties, witnesses said.

At least eight people were killed in the blast, as well as the bomber, Bauchi state police commissioner Mohammed Ladan said. He said security personnel stationed near the churches stopped the car from getting any closer to worshippers than it did.

More than 40 people suffered injuries in the blast, the Nigerian Red Cross said.

The powerful blast from the car destroyed part of the Harvest Field Church, sending walls of the building crashing down on worshippers still inside. Others suffered burns in the blast.

The death toll from the blast could rise. Police and soldiers surrounded the church immediately after the explosion, stopping emergency workers from going inside to collect the corpses of those killed. Witnesses who left the church after the blast said they saw as many as 10 dead.
