21 years in Prison for killing 77 people. Way to go Norway
« on: August 24, 2012, 06:43:51 AM »
WTF!  21 years which might end up being 10 years for killing 77 people.  Is Norway that fucked up?

Oslo, Norway (CNN) -- Anders Behring Breivik, the man who killed 77 people in a bomb attack and gun rampage just over a year ago, was judged to be sane by a Norwegian court Friday, as he was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Breivik was charged with voluntary homicide and committing acts of terror in the attacks in Oslo and on Utoya Island on July 22, 2011.

The issue of Breivik's sanity, on which mental health experts have given conflicting opinions, was central to the court's ruling.

Breivik, who boasts of being an ultranationalist who killed his victims to fight multiculturalism in Norway, wanted to be ruled sane so that his actions wouldn't be dismissed as those of a lunatic

No shit, heard this on NPR this morning and was like, "holy shit, this dude would've been riding the lightning here."  Maybe the judge was a right wing sympathizer.  He'll probably write a book while in prison about "his struggle".  It will become a best seller.

Under Norwegian law 21 years is the maximum sentence. You can't get more - they don't have life imprisonment. However, they can keep you inside indefinitely after that 21 years if they still assess you to be a danger. They won't let the guy out after what he did, ever.

Liberal society, liberal court, and a bunch of pussies that believe a POS like that can be rehabilitated.

Even in Norway, you have a 75% chance of ending in a cell with a 300-pound black guy named Bubba looking for a soul mate.

his jail cell looks nicer than the trailer I lived in thru college.  :(

His quarters also have a steel toilet and sink, and are monitored around the clock by specially trained staff via CCTV cameras.

All the furniture is firmly fixed to the floor and ceiling to prevent him using them as weapons.

Ila prison decided not to release pictures of his bedroom to spare his privacy.

The spacious set-up is a result of the particularly high security regime he has been placed under.

He has no contact with other prisoners and has his own outdoor exercise yard measuring between 20 and 30 square metres, where he can spend an hour each day.

The yard is surrounded by high concrete walls and barbed wire to stop him escaping or seeing other prisoners.

The law can be funny at times.  Like here if you kill one or two people you get the death penalty, if you kill a dozen you simply sit in jail the rest of your life.

21 years is very long time, but there wont be parole and they can keep him inside after that.

its called general security lock away or something.

the guy will never come out.

not alive.

sensationalist remarks like "only 21 years blabla" are made by smart people behind newspapers who want some suckers to justify harsh or even death enalties by causing an emotional reaction.

careful what you wish for.

in europe we dont vindicate insane killers by killing them in return.

It's dangerous making such posts here, you're gonna get the shit flamed out of you.

That's the thing.

Rule of law - there can be no individual punishment and they can't just change the law for one guy. Where would that lead, huh? Making an example out of him would've been dangerous.
People need to get their shit together and realize that the guy's probably not gonna get out anytime soon (read: ever).

Norway is humane country with civilized justice system.

Over-long sentences are traditional to countries with something to hide or to countries which couldn't be ruled with civilized systems (for whatever reason).

No question it shouldn't change the law and penalty ex post facto just for Breivik, but it's a bizarre situation when you think about it.  Norway's laws are clearly on the softer side, yet it's crime rate is quite low, so perhaps it just hasn't had the need to address things in recent decades.  Yet at some point, even if a system is based more on the concept of rehabilitation, doesn't it make sense to combine penalties?  Why leave it to some future, subjective determination whether or not he should remain "contained" or whatever the term is?  Just in terms of initial sentencing, shouldn't murdering 77 people be considered worse than murdering 1?

The man is in full segregation, it is only a matter of time before he loses his mind. Eventually he will begin to look forward to the times when the cctv 'accidentally' goes offline for a few minutes, so the guards can come in and beat the piss out of him. At least that will give him some form of human contact.
Its not relevant to compare the American justice system to Norways, or anywhere else for that matter. Norways justice system is one the best in the world, with low recidivism rates across the board, what they do there works.
  Unusually high suicide rate though.

He'll be there forever.  21 years is max, UNLESS you are deemed a danger to society.

He's not going anywhere.
