August 26, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – More than 200 earthquakes centered near Brawley in Imperial County have rocked our region in the past 24, many felt by residents across San Diego. The strongest measured 5.5 and 5.3 on the Richter scale; the most recent, a 5.1, rattled the area at 10 p.m.

According to the San Diego County Emergency website, the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) has conferred with scientists representing the California Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, Cal Tech and the Southern California Earthquake Center. Cal EMA is advising Imperial County that an increased likelihood exists for continued seismic activity for at least the next 24 hours, potentially including earthquakes larger than today's magnitude 5.5 earthquake.

Brawley has previously had swarms of quakes in the 1970s and 1930s. The Brawley fault cluster is tied to the San Andreas fault and is among the most seismically active places in California.

Dozens of earthquakes rattle Southern California

By NBCSanDiego.com and news services

Updated at 11:58 p.m. ET: A rash of up to 70 moderate earthquakes rattled Southern California on Sunday, shaking an area from rural Imperial County to the San Diego coast and north into the Coachella Valley.

According to the USGS, the largest quake was 5.5-magnitude that rattled Brawley, Calif., small Imperial County farming town, just before 2 p.m.

A 5.3 magnitude quake struck at 12:31 p.m. about three miles north-northwest of Brawley, according to Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed minutes later by a 4.9 magnitude quake.

The epicenters of the bigger earthquakes were 11 to 12 miles from Imperial, Calif., and 15 to 16 miles from El Centro, Calif., the USGS reported.

Gentlemen, it has begun....

Lol. I was actually going to take a "baby moon" with my wife over Christmas to Europe starting the 21st and coming back Jan 2, then looked at the date I was supposed to leave and am thinking about changing the date of departure. Not because I'm superstitious, but because I'm afraid some jackass will do something dumb that day in the airport.

I plan on going to Germany for vacation around 19 Dec and will return 23 Dec assuming there are still airplanes and ships. I will be on high ground Dec 21. and in the path of he sun to accept any energies to complete my spontaneous evolution.

I felt all three of them.  the second was pretty tight.  The house jolted then rocked for about 5 seconds.  Hate that shit.

  • Better to die on your feet than on your knees.
I lived in SD for 9 years.  During that time I hardly felt a tremor, but I always had it in the back of my mind that the big one could happen at any moment.

I don't know if it's connected, but over the past 2 years I've had many dreams of huge waves of water crashing onto a beach town and killing everyone.  I always wake up scared and breathing hard... freaky shit.

Was it a rolling quake or a sharp jolt quake?  Side by side, or up and down?

I was in the Northridge Earthquake.  Lived 4 miles from the epicenter, and my work was 1/2 mile away from the epicenter. I know earthquakes.  The tremors from that earthquake lasted weeks...

first was a jolt.  The second was a jolt then the roll for like 5 seconds.  Like the house was on a wave, the third was the same but not as strong.

What is annoying is the noises that come out of the house, like the walls are cracking or something.
