Red Carpet for Solyndra Figure at Democratic Convention

By BRIAN ROSS and MATTHEW MOSK

Energy Official Who Pushed for Solyndra Loan Gets VIP Tour

The Obama campaign rolled out the red carpet this week for a former top Energy Department official who was at the center of the ill-fated government loan to Solyndra, a California solar panel firm that wound up in bankruptcy.

Steven J. Spinner joined other top fundraisers for a VIP tour of the Democratic National Convention floor in Charlotte Monday evening, posing and waving for a photographer while standing behind the podium. When he saw ABC News cameras, however, he ran for the exit.

WATCH World News with Diane Sawyer Tonight for More on Spinner and the DNC.

Spinner was last in the headlines in October, when emails surfaced showing he had pushed for the Solyndra loan from his post in the Energy Department, apparently in an effort to score the loan as a political victory for President Obama.

READ the Original Blotter Story About Spinner's Emails

"How hard is this? What is he waiting for?" Spinner wrote in one of them. "I have OVP [the Office of the Vice President] and WH [the White House] breathing down my neck on this."

The fast-tracked Solyndra loan became the showpiece of the Obama administration's Green Energy loan program -- a plan to give a jolt of federal aid to firms developing new forms of alternative energy. Solyndra, the program's inaugural loan recipient, received $535 million.

But it fast became a symbol for Obama's Republican opponents, who have characterized the loan as a boondoggle. The company's bankruptcy led to a lengthy investigation by the Republican-led House Energy and Commerce Committee, which argued that the administration failed to heed warnings from budget analysts who believed the company was a bad bet.

READ All ABC News DNC Coverage on Our Democratic Convention Page.

White House officials have called the House investigation a waste of taxpayer money, noting that Republicans never uncovered any evidence to suggest the loan was granted as a result of political influence.

This week, Spinner has been attending a number of events organized for the campaign's top donors -- members of the National Finance Committee. He is sporting a badge that identifies him as a "Finance Guest."

He appears also to be a top donor to the convention's host committee, which accepts up to $100,000 from individuals to help offset the cost of the three-day Charlotte event. The host committee organized the podium tour that Spinner attended.

ABC News made repeated attempts to interview Spinner as the Solyndra saga unfolded, and he declined. When he was approached by ABC News on the convention floor Monday, he bolted for an exit.

A DNC employee blocked ABC News reporters from following Spinner as he broke into a run.

"You can't follow people," the aide said, as he held up his arms to keep the camera from filming Spinner as he left the venue.

Neither the Obama campaign nor the White House responded to requests for comment about Spinner.

This is not Spinner's first foray into fundraising for Obama.

Spinner was awarded his high-ranking post with the Energy Department after raising more than $500,000 for Obama's 2008 campaign, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

After taking the job, Spinner had to sign a waiver saying he would not get involved in deliberations involving Solyndra, because his wife's law firm represented the company in certain legal matters. Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters that Spinner "had no connection to overseeing the loan guarantee program."Spinner's wife also pledged not to take proceeds from her firm's work with companies that had applied for loans, and a spokesperson for Allison Spinner's firm said she had not been involved in any Solyndra business.

But when the White House turned over internal emails to Congress, the records showed that Steve Spinner figured prominently into the Energy Department's efforts to promote the loan politically. When the loan was set to be announced, he pushed for a "big event" with "golden shovels, bulldozers, hardhats, etc.," according to one email he wrote.

He also corresponded with career Department of Energy loan officials who were making the final decisions on the Solyndra loan. In one instance, he wrote, "Hopefully, this might spur [the Office of Management and Budget] a little faster to help the closing."

CHARLOTTE,N.C. — Dozens of protesters on Tuesday shut down an intersection blocks from the Democratic National Convention here, drawing hundreds of police officers and curious onlookers as they chanted against corporate greed, drone missiles and all manner of political woes.

Officers armed with wooden bats, paintball guns and plastic handcuffs lined the perimeter of East Stonewall Street and South Caldwell Street while cheers of “Free Manning, Arrest Barack” and “You are the army of the rich” rose from men and women sitting and standing in the road. Bradley Manning is the Army private accused of leaking vast archives of classified U.S. documents to the Wikileaks whistleblower website in 2010.

Ed Hunt, a 59-year-old veteran from Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., said the ultimate goal for the demonstrators was that convention-goers see that “this is happening, that we have the right to protest.”

“There’s so much to change,” he added. “There’s no reason for anybody to be separated.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said that what the protesters were doing was illegal, but police were “not in any rush to do anything” as the protesters were just peacefully occupying the intersection. Many of the streets around the convention’s main site are already sealed off from most traffic.

Wow - TA must be thrilled.

I just saw this on Fox News a few minutes ago. The guy on the stage called for the platform to be amended, to put God and Jerusalem back in it, despite all the boos. Then he said it was by a two-thirds margin.

Eking out an existence is precisely what Belinda Cherry, 41, says she and her husband were doing — until the Dems came to town.

With his salary as a part-time dishwasher, they had been able to afford a room at the Arlington Suites on South Tryon St., the same motel where Ramsey was bunking down.

But after the hotel ratcheted up its rates, Cherry and her husband were left sleeping atop a cement loading dock outside an abandoned brick building.

“I’m really pissed off,” said Cherry. “We were just now getting on our feet.”

Her husband, Steven, voted for Obama in 2008 and plans to do so again, but still he wondered when help would arrive for people like him......

EPIC DNC FAIL: Reports Thousands of Delegates, Media Locked Out of Democrat Convention Tonight
Wednesday, September 5, 2012 | Kristinn
Posted on September 5, 2012 9:35:49 PM EDT by kristinn

The Democratic National Convention has descended in to chaos today both inside and outside the Time Warner arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Following the debacle earlier today of the ramming through over the loud objections of delegates of pro-God, pro-Israel language to the platform, fire marshalls have locked down the arena leaving a reported thousands of credentialed delegates and reporters stranded outside.

Reporters on Twitter are sending out on scene reports and photographs with commentary such as "mayhem", "fail" and "farce".

"Democratic convention descending into farce. After "booing God" debacle, delegates, and media locked out of the convention by fire marshals" , Nico Hines, Times of London.

"Complete nightmare for the DNC. Thousands of delegates and media stuck outside. Fire marshals have closed the building. #DNCFAIL", Matt Spence, Times of London.

DNC Delegate’s Freak Death Threat: ‘Mitt Romney… I Would Like To Kill Him!’
The Blaze ^ | Sept. 5, 2012 | Benny Johnson
Posted on September 5, 2012 10:06:52 PM EDT by Free ThinkerNY

During the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, TheBlaze took to Time Warner Cable Arena to speak with delegates about the most pressing issues of our time. Most of those interviewed were good sports, answering questions about the trajectory of the country under Obama, the Affordable Care Act and even Socialism.

One of our conversations took an unexpected turn, however, when we asked New York delegate Julia Rodriguez about her views on the direction of the country. Rodriguez promptly shouted that she would, in fact, like to “kill” Mitt Romney.

Obama breaks promise to teen campaign volunteers by uninviting them to his speech

ABC News reports:

A pair of teenagers volunteered for 18 hours on the Obama campaign this summer to earn their golden tickets to President Obama’s big speech at the Bank of America stadium Thursday night.

Today Madeline Frank, 16, and her brother Koby, 14, were told they’ve been disinvited and their tickets are no longer valid because the location of Obama’s speech was moved from the 73,000 seat open air Bank of America Stadium to the smaller TimeWarner Cable Arena, which can hold about 21,000. The move was made because of a forecast of rain and thunderstorms.

“I’ve been looking forward to this for a really long time,” Madeline Frank of Charlotte, N.C., said today. “I am just feeling really let down and like bummed. It was kind of my dream to see him speak, so definitely really sad.”

Although she isn’t old enough to vote, Madeline knocked on doors and canvassed her neighborhood for nine hours so she could see the president when he came to her hometown Thursday because she wanted to be part of the excitement in her city. The Obama campaign’s “9-3-1″ plan offered volunteers one ticket to Thursday’s event in exchange for giving nine hours of their time over three days.

This is absolutely, completely pathetic on Obama’s part. But it’s not a surprise.

I mean – it’s not a surprise to me. It is a surprise to these volunteers, because apparently they hadn’t been aware of the huge number of other promises that Obama had broken.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Rows of enthusiastic vendors hawking Obama buttons, tote bags, puppets, T-shirts and other memorabilia seem to be doing brisk business beside the Charlotte Convention Center, where thousands of delegates and members of the media have descended for the three-day Democratic National Convention. But just across the street, and behind a row of low metal barricades, a cluster of unhappy vendors—many of whom traveled hundreds of miles to attend the convention and are ardent Obama supporters—say they paid thousands of dollars to rent stalls that were placed in an out-of-the-way, unmarked parking lot where they are steadily losing money.
On Wednesday, news spread around the lot that President Barack Obama's Thursday night speech will no longer take place in the planned outdoor stadium, pushing convention attendees even farther away from the vendors.
"We feel forgotten," said Marcy Nation of Georgia, who has a stall selling Obama bumper stickers and other memorabilia in the lot. Nation is directing 10 percent of her proceeds to the Obama campaign. Several vendors who were originally given spots around Nation have picked up and moved on altogether, giving the lot an abandoned feeling. Nation said she expected the DNC host committee to put up large signs directing foot traffic to the lot, and said the street barriers make it hard for passers-by to cross over from the convention center. "They don't know we're here," she said.
The DNC has not yet responded to Yahoo News' requests for comment about the vendors' complaints. In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, a spokeswoman for the host committee said the hefty fees for tent stalls were needed to cover the cost of renting the parking lot for the week.
"I am sure President Obama [would] be disappointed to know that small businesses were being taken advantage of," said Adrian Stowe, who ended up leaving his $3,000 rented stall to sell official DNC convention T-shirts across the street, closer to the foot traffic. On that side of the street, vendor licenses cost just $200 because there are no tent stalls. Vendors either carry their goods or set up their own tables. Stowe, a Charlotte business owner, said fewer than 100 people wandered into the lot on Tuesday. "We're losing major money. I've got bins full of product," he said.
"There's no traffic, no exposure," said a vendor named Debrah, who didn't want to give her full name because she's a former Obama campaign staffer in Ohio. Debrah's team paid about $3,000 to rent a tent in the parking lot, where they've set up a stall selling "Hope" buttons, Obama T-shirts and Obama family tote bags. "The feeling is that the [DNC host committee] took our money and put us in a parking lot and didn't offer us any support," she said. Debrah, like Stowe and Nation, says she doesn't blame President Obama or his campaign for the situation, but that many vendors do. "Unfortunately, for most of the vendors it's been a bad experience and they're holding it against Obama."

One such vendor is Gwendolyn Clarke, who traveled from New York with her son and daughter's bottled water business, called NAL Water. The South Carolina water goes for $3 a bottle, but the Clarke family quickly marked that down to $1 after an insurance company called Humana began giving away free bottled water. The Clarkes maintain the practice of giving away items is against the rules they agreed to

"I'm not listening to the rhetoric anymore. You can't treat small businesses like that because we are the backbone of the country," said Clarke, who volunteers for Obama's campaign in New York. Clarke says she will "absolutely not" vote for Obama in November, and will instead support Mitt Romney.

While Clarke was explaining her troubles, a potential customer walked by and asked, "Are you giving away free water?" Clarke told her no, and the customer ended up buying a bottle for the reduced price of $1. It's one of fewer than 20 bottles the family has sold since Tuesday.

No, I don't think so. Bill Clinton's in a league all to himself.

He's something special. It's like the political/rhetorical equivalent of watching Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, and Willie Mays rolled into one. Seriously, he's sui generis. Obama has talent; Clinton possesses genius. Seriously. And remember how he was forsaken by much of the black voting bloc during Hilary's run for the nomination? Remember that piece of shit, Carol Moseley Braun?

Unfortunately for the Dems, Bubba ain't the ticket; Obama is. And when P.I.P's trance wears off completely, that reality will hit him and others in the face.

Plus, Clinton's presence (despite his statement) COMPLETELY TORPEDOES the "Blame Bush" mantra that Obama and his liberal kneepadder continue to spew.

Clinton went far left; the Dems got creamed in '94 midterms; he wised up, went to the center, hijacked some GOP ideas and sprinkle some liberalism on them and got re-elected.

But, you won't find ONE Democrat in that arena, giving props to the GOP Congress (especially one Newt Gingrich) for their hand in it. ALL the praise goes to Clinton.

If all the praise goes to Clinton for his success; then all the failure of the last four years goes on OBAMA, especially since the Dems ignored their role in the disaster, during the last two years of the Bush administration when they ran Congress.

I think what was most powerful about President Bill Clinton touting President Obama & VP Joe Biden tonight was last week the Republicans did not and/or could not let President George W. Bush do the same for Gov Mitt Romney & Congressman Paul Ryan!

Tonight those independents who watch the convention with me were for the most part, persuaded by President Clinton. And I don't think the jobs report on Friday will change what impact President Clinton's speech had on independents because he told the story in a way that the Dems have not been able to articulate. Many left my house with a clear choice for re-electing President Obama the others were inspired but still think President Obama policies are not right for America's financial future; that said, they are still on the fence and will decide after the debates.

All in all a good night with very good discussions from all in attendance and more importantly, without the mindless mud slinging that goes on here at getbig.

I was joking, I'm not swayed for a second by this something for nothing giveaway convention.  "We'll give you guys birth control, you guys get healthcare, these folks get college, we'll give you guys cell phones.  We're going to pay for all this by making sure Mitt Romney pays as much taxes as his secretary!!!".
