The Road Warriors : Danger, Death and the Rush of Wrestling
« on: August 29, 2012, 10:34:19 AM »
This is the book that Animal wrote about his career as half of the Road Warriors.  It was a pretty decent read.  You can tell that he was embarrassed in the beginning to have to admit that neither he nor Hawk were actually any good in the ring.   While he addressed Hawk drug use and how Hawk walked out on him for a while, you can tell he left out a lot of stuff and watered down what he did include.

One of the funniest parts was where he was talking about how everyone in the locker room thought that Sweet Stan Lane (half of Midnight Express with Bobby Eaton) was full of shit and like a prissy ballerina with those "karate" kicks he used to do.  He actually thought they looked dangerous and vicious when he did them.  But they were so shitty.   It brought back memories how I used to watch it and think the same thing.  That little jumping front bicycle kick looked like a damn leprachaun with hot feet.   And that spinning back kick that normally went everywhere but in the opponents midsection.  Arms, hips, knees, etc..

When we used to get together and wrestle on the trampoline back home, NOBODY ever wanted to be Sweet Stan.

That number is still higher than the number of kids who wanted to be the "American Dream."

Another story was at the hotel Hawk was coming up from downstairs and Shawn was drugged up and heading down stairs and they met in the middle with Shawn trying to bully his way by and slapping Hawk.   So Hawk punched the shit out of him and sent him crying to Patterson.  Hawk and Animal went out drinking and upon coming back to the hotel found Shawn passed out in the lobby.  He had taken a pillow case and filled it up with rocks, beer bottles, office items, chunks of ice, etc.. and was waiting for Hawk to return and attack him with it.  Instead he sat down on the couch and passed out while waiting.

Then there was Rotunda that went to jump a fence and sneak into the pool next door and instead caught his dick on the top prong of the fence and when he fell over it peeled all the skin off his dick from the bottom, up the shaft, and over the head.  Had to have surgery on it.

Shawn is such a bitch.
I think I'll go have a few drinks and then "accidentally" nuke the "Sweet Chin Music" thread.

I guy I knew when i was in my 20's got into a scuffle with Shawn when the (then WWF) has a show in my area.  The staff and police had to escort all the wrestlers out of the bar b/c there was a mob of locals ready to pounce.  lol.  It was pretty funny.  To be honest, the wrestlers prob. woulda kicked ass.

I guess it depends on the wrestlers.
Shawn, Razor, and 123-PAC were barely able to stand most of the time due to being slushed on Somas, but Diesel and Hunter were often nearby to watch their backs.

When I still watched wrestling, I remember seeing an obviously intoxicated/high Hawk come tumbling down the entrance ramp when some fireworks went off because he was so wasted.

Bret told a story involving Hawk and someone else (I can't remember who, at the moment) backstage downing Somas with coffee literally minutes before a match. He said they treated it like some kind of tough-guy pissing contest to see who could down the most pills and still function.
Hart said that, amazingly, the match went okay despite Hawk spending most of his time standing on the apron, plastered, while Animal carried the bulk of the match.

I can't remember if Vince ever caught on, or not. But, I sometimes wonder if that puppet gimmick they gave LOD was intended to make the team quit the Fed. I realize that the old man has done a lot of stupid things out of spite, but I have doubts that he would have pulled that kind of shit with the RW's thinking they'd put up with it.

Maybe Vince saw the writing on the wall and figured it was easier to do this than firing them.

Sorry if off topic but were you a wrestler?  Which one?

I wrestled, but only at the local, shitty indy level. I'm nobody you would know.
The promoters I knew booked a lot of former talent from the "big-3." I got to hang around especially a lot of ECW alumni like Douglas, Candido & Sytch, Mahoney, Sandman, etc.

Other guys off the top of my head who made their way through our parts include:
Matt Bourne (Doink)
Honkey Tonk Man
Foley
A.J. Styles
Bam-Bam
Lawler
Bruno
Missing Link
Tracy Smothers
Lord Zultan
CM Punk - about 3 years pre-WWF
King Kong Bundy - who was fantastic with the fans during intermission
and Virgil - who was a complete dick

Bear in mind, I didn't get to sit down for a beer with all of these guys; some of them I didn't even get to make introductions with - not because they were arrogant assholes, but because usually there's a lot more to do at bigger shows.
I will say that all of the ECW guys were very cool and down to earth except New Jack, who insisted on staying in character the entire time, which was quite annoying. The rest were a lot of fun to talk with.

How was Smothers?  I've heard good things about him.

He was quiet. Didn't seem to have an ego. I really never talked much with him, as he usually slept on a table or chairs in the lobby until we started letting fans through the doors. I seem to remember he usually had quite a drive to get to our area.
He always seemed cooperative, reliable, and safe. He usually worked with Chris Hamrick as Southern Comfort.

Matt's father was "Tough" Tony.

Ok.  My parents would always go see Tony here in the Pacific NW back in the day before I was around.

Way to go destroying their enjoyment of watching guys in tights pretending to fight! ;D

I believe the elder Bourne passed away several years ago.

Off topic here, but has anyone been having trouble logging on here?  When I use IE, all I get is some error code.  It has been that way since the weekend, and I know Stoppa was having issues as well.

Ron apparently upgraded or switched over to a new server. Getbig was down for much of Saturday. I heard that members received either a "site under maintenance" message, or a "404 Not Found" page.
It's been running fine for me since.

I still can't get on with IE, it still says fatal error, but Mozilla works fine.  I am going to check with Stoppa.
