Question about stores in US

This might be a stupid question for most of you but I would like to know: are usual stores (not places like Walmart and similar) open 24hrs in Us or you have european like times of opening/closing?

the only stores I can think of off the top of my head is, a few restaurants, convenience stores, and Wal-mart. I Live in austin tho, bigger cities may by different.

Depends on where you are.  Ex: I am from and live in Vegas.  Because Vegas is a 24 hour town, most of the Walmart and grocery stores stay open 24/7...unless youre in a high crime area, them they close.

I've been stationed other places in the states and Walmarts and grocery stores close at 1 or 2.  Especially in the bible belt.  Def. depends on the city and crime.

I was surprised to see (on Wiki) that Austin is 4th biggest city of Texas and has "only" population 820.000  :o

The Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh near my place was open 24 hrs. At least, I think so. I went there hella late after work a lot, and it was always open.

In this part of TN most mom and pop stores are from 8 til 5, some are close Wednesdays most all are closed Sundays. We don`t shoot at people just because they are black, we have some fine upstanding black folks around here. We shoot at people because they act like assholes no matter what shade of color they are.

I was just jocking with stereotypes (like the greasy/lazy bum italian ones), no offence.
btw interesting post: it seems that apart from big commercial chains, opening/closing of store is more or less the same as here.

I live in NYC. Most places in manhattan are not 24 hours, but they are open to 3-4am. Most major chain supermarkets are 24 hours. Smaller stores are open till about 9-10pm at night.

Here smallest stores close at 19 or so.
No chain supermarkets 24 hrs.

 None taken. I thought in Italy everybody loads up on carbohydrates at 1 PM and then takes a little nap and re-opens their stores at 3 PM.

No. Youre thinking of NYC and ONLY thinking of Manhattan. Remember there is Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island.  most stores (drug stores, delis) close anywhere from 6-10pm. Restaurants, bars, clubs (depending on which one) can stay open to as late as 4am.

Most of the stores here in NYC need a few hours starting at 3-4am so they can restock and clean up. The delivery trucks come at this time so they dont clog up the streets in the day, and they have to park on the streets in front of the stores. Its not like we have giant wal marts with a warehouse for a stock room in the back with loading docks.

lol If you go down to around 6th tho, all the stores are open to at least last call.

It depends...if you mean food stores, there are many open 24 hours.  I know several named Krogers that are 24 hour...I know one named Randalls open 24 hours...

for drugstores...Walgreens has several 24 hours...some with the pharmacy part open 24 hours so you can get prescriptions filled at any hour...another is called CVS.

Food stores even when closed always has workers in them doing things so it was determined that it didn’t cost much to have big food and drugstores open for business at night.
This is for Houston, which while has nightlife...it is not a 24 hour town.

I am told that NYC has shopping districts that while not 24 hour, the hours are skewed so as to cater to night workers.

I live in a medium sized city, we've got several grocery stores in my area that are open 24/7, McDonalds, Rite-Aid, One Gym (24 H Fitness).  Some gas stations leave their pumps on so you can get gas anytime with a credit/debt card.
