the Paralympics
« on: September 01, 2012, 02:41:28 AM »
Well the olympics ended a couple of weeks ago and now the paralympics have started in London. Is anyone interested in it or getting excited by it?

I find it an exercise in PC patronisation.

One of them (cyclist Jody Cundy) had a meltdown yesterday after he tried to claim a false start in the cycling and was not allowed to restart.

I thought the special olympics was about goodwill and letting the handicapt people show what they could achieve. Instread we have to listen to this guy's foul outburst. I mean we have created a competition so they can show us what they can do with their one leg or whatever in a spirit of special people coming together from around the world and yet this guys swears like a real bad sport. I'm sure a normal athlete like Chris Hoy would not have had a meltdown like Jody did. I realise we need to take their special condition into account but WTF?

It's nice and important to have this kind of event for them. I'm all supporting this.

This way the "para-athletes" from countries where being 'disabled' is still kind of "taboo" can get more visibility and therefore, I hope, more acceptance.
I also hope the athletes victorious in paralympics will get appropriate rewards from their governments.

But the Paralympics are for people who are body mental, not head mental, that's the special Olympics.

Those paraplegic dudes go 100 meters in under 14 seconds using only their upper bodies! I would like to see pro bodybuilders race against them on foot and lose!  ;D

political correct bullshit.

these games may have 0.001% viewers of the real olympics. how does this justify funding the event. it doesn't..

One of the most interesting bench presses I've seen was at a paralympics event #290kgs/#638lbs bench press -

.

No leg drive help, imagine that.

The Paralympics are giving a tremendous boost to both the confidence of people with disabilities and their acceptance in society. It represents the Olympic spirit as well if not even better than the Olympics themselves

Come to London and see for yourself

Yeah, he looked totally ok. Looked it up, he's "legally blind".. One thing I don't like is that some people have no legs or arms but they are running against people with one eye.

Dude trained 4 years for his chain to malfunction. But if he'd fallen over sideways he would have got a restart, is that fair?

I would have gone fucking mental too! haha

They are classed in similar disability groupings.

E.g someone with a missing limb yet otherwise fine may be against those with mobility problems but 4 limbs. The rationale is that they both may have mobility and balance issues so they are grouped together. I do agree though that some things seem grossly unfair in the whole thing.

I was in teh barbers yesterday when that Brit cyclist had the dubious start. I kinda sided with him.

Also cyclist with some fingers missing?
Hardly a hinderance to cycling is it?

That's fucking ridiculous.

really?
Care to explain?
Prosthetic limbs these days can grip a set of handle bars, you do realise the cycles they use don't have brakes or gears don't you?
So care to explain how it would hinder?

Er...where did I say it would hinder?

I think it would affect the balance.

One Brit girl missed out on the normal Olympics by a few 100ths of a second or something despite her disability and now she is bossing in the paras.
