People are jealous of his physique so they endlessly nick pick to find something wrong. People who are perceived to have it easy like Heath are always going to attract negative attention. All he ever had to do is stick a needle in his ass and grow. Nature already did the rest for him.
Good points and may account for some of Heath's lack of enthusiastic fans?
Heath is known as "the gift". That implies his bodybuilding success is due largely due his genetic talent for bodybuilding.
Phil Heath didn't struggle for years in the NPC ranks trying to go pro. He won pro shows shortly after entering the pro ranks.
When it was his shot to win, he did, after Jay stumbled with an upper arm injury.
People want to root for someone who either struggled or is a unique character.
It is like a very pretty girl going to the prom and being crowned queen. The other girls might admire her, but nobody gets too excited when she wins. It seemed obvious and was too easy.
Here is my breakdown of the unique appeal of various Olympians:
1.Dorian Yates was one of the most popular Mr Olympias and he was NOT a very talkative , warm guy with fans.
His whole image was based on the idea of being an iron warrior traning in a dungeon.
He was known as "the shadow" and that image of emerging from his dungeon as a complete freak each yr appealed to fans.
Yates personified the ultra , hardcore ideals of winning via intense training, grainy conditioning and drug use.
2. Arnold was the man and just had that size andcharisma that demanded attention and respect. Plus Arnold was a funny guy who could win support from any group.
3. Frank Zane won his three Olypias by having incredible shape , blance and being ripped to shreds. He wasn't the biggest guy but won by superior conditioning. Beating the giants made him popular with the masses.
4. Lee Haney was the soft spoken "awwshucks" sincere , decent man. Plus he had the greatest physique of his era and dominated the stage. He took the Olympia stage with a sense of class and dignity.
5. Ronnie Coleman is a larger then life persona in person. Ronnie was beyond belief in his prime. He was a cop, Div I linebacker and earned his way up the pro ranks to be Mr Olympia. Ronnie was a big, fun, friendly man that always seemed to enjoy being a bodybuilder , in and out of the gym. I can sum his appeal for me as Mr Olym;pia with ease.
Hardcore bodybuilders could show NON bodybuilders pics ofr videos of Ronnie or see him in person at an expo.
You could sit back, point at big Ronnie and say ; " That's Mr Olympia!" Then sit back and look at the awe and OMG look from the other person.
6. Jay Cutler is popular because Jay has incredible people skills. Plus, he is a big guy that represents what hardcore bodybuilding is all about. Being big, wide and massive with incredible legs.
