Smells Like War
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:08:13 PM »
..DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran accused Canada on Saturday of "hostile behavior" under Israeli and British influence after Ottawa cut diplomatic relations, and it raised the prospect of swift retaliation.

Canada said on Friday that it was closing its embassy in Tehran and gave Iranian diplomats five days to leave the country, branding the Islamic Republic as the "most significant threat to global peace and security".

Ottawa cited Iran's disputed nuclear work, which Western states see as a disguised effort to develop atomic bombs, its hostility toward Israel and alleged military aid to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is battling a popular uprising.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the Canadian move was a "continuation of anti-Iranian policies" by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government, which has long had poor relations with Tehran.

"The current government of Canada under the leadership of Mr Stephen Harper is known for extreme policies in the domain of foreign policy," Mehr news agency quoted Mehmanparast as saying.

"The hostile behaviour of the current racist government in Canada in reality follows the policies dictated by the Zionists (Israel) and the British."

The Jewish state is Iran's arch-enemy, while Britain expelled Iranian diplomats late last year after radical Iranian protesters sacked its embassy in Tehran.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who heads Iran's influential parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, said there could be an "immediate and decisive" response to Canada's action, Fars news agency reported.

"It is essential that the foreign ministry respond to this action by Canada on the basis of national interests."

CANADIAN DIPLOMATS ALREADY GONE

Canada's 10 diplomats in Iran have already left Tehran, the Canadian foreign ministry said on Friday.

Western states led by the United States believe Iran is covertly trying to develop nuclear weapons capability, though Iran states its uranium enrichment work is wholly peaceful, aimed at generating electricity and medical isotopes.

Mehmanparast said the Canadian move was an attempt to nullify Iran's diplomatic success in hosting a summit of Non-Aligned Movement developing countries last month, which he said Canada had tried to scuttle.

He said Canada's anti-Iranian policies included a ban on money transfers for Iranian students studying in Canada and the blocking of the bank accounts of ordinary Iranians as a result of Western sanctions imposed on Iran's banking sector.

There is a large Iranian diaspora in Canada, with more than 120,000 people reporting Iranian ethnic origins.

Ottawa's bilateral relations with Tehran deteriorated markedly in 2003, when Iranian-Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi died in Tehran's Evin prison while in custody.

The closure of Ottawa's Tehran mission is the most significant row between Iran and another country since the ransacking of the UK embassy, which British officials said could not have happened without some level of government consent.

The United States has not had a functioning embassy in Tehran since the 1979-81 hostage crisis, when 52 Americans were held for 444 days.

Just trying to clarify, you think Canada is going to attack or declare war on Iran? Or it will simply be part of yet another coalition?

I believe he's saying that Canada pulling diplomatic ties simply implies that they believe a war is on the horizon, not that Canada itself will be involved, morseo their southern neighbors.

Robo-Gate: Harper Conservatives stole the 2011 election from the NDP

The New Democratic Party (NDP) suggested in a press conference today that the Conservatives rigged the May 2011 federal election against the Bloc Quebecois, NDP and Liberals. Call it election rigging western style. Apparently, RackNine Inc, a Conservative Party-linked firm called 18 key swing ridings and sent opposition voters to false voting stations or incorrectly advised them of changed polling locations.

Outspoken Winnipeg NDP Member of Parliament Pat Martin (pictured) is understandably furious. This is a naked assault on Canadian democracy.

Martin has called the scandal, unraveled by Ottawa Citizen, the “largest electoral fraud in Canadian history.”  He’s called on the RCMP to investigate.

And New Democrat MPs Alexandre Boulerice and Charlie Angus have rightly written to the Commissioner of Canada Elections requesting a full investigation. Rightly so. The NDP was the biggest loser here. The party lost a handful of seats by a few hundred votes. In Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar (Saskatchewan), the Conservatives beat the NDP 14,652 to 14,114, for a 538-vote margin of victory. In Elmwood-Transcona (Manitoba), 284 votes separated the two parties. The NDP polled 14,996 to the Conservatives’ 15,280.

This could be a game changer for Canada. The Conservative Party holds a slim 10-seat majority in Parliament.

And the NDP’s letter to Commissioner of Canada Elections:

Dear Commissioner:

I am writing about potential criminal election violations reported today by the Ottawa Citizen and Postmedia in the article Fraudulent election calls traced to Edmonton firm with Tory links.

As the story outlines, and has been documented in the past, the 41st General Election was tarnished with a series of controversial automated phone calls near the end of the campaign. These calls seemed to be intended to suppress voting and discourage supporters of other parties. There were also calls claiming to be from Elections Canada advising electors of changed polling locations and other misinformation designed to disrupt voting.

Today’s news reports seem to draw a direct link between these calls and a company called RackNine Inc. If true, many of the activities allegedly undertaken by RackNine Inc. are explicitly prohibited by the Elections Canada Act.

Some of the sections that may have been violated include:

43(a) and 43(b): the wilful obstruction and impersonation of the duties of an election officer
56(e): the misuse of information obtained from the Register of Elections
281(g): the wilful endeavour to prevent and elector from voting
480(1): the intent of delaying or obstructing the electoral process
482(b): to induce a person to refrain from voting The article also outlines the possible involvement of Conservative Party operatives in these activities.
If any electoral campaign, registered party campaign or entity working on behalf of a registered party supported these dirty tricks and disrupted Canadians from exercising their right to vote, further sections of the Elections Canada Act may also have been violated.

The Conservative Party of Canada has an unfortunate history of breaking the rules around elections, as demonstrated by their pleading guilty to violating the Canada Election Act and their complete disregard for Canada’s fixed election date law.

For many, these dirty tricks are just further evidence of how Ottawa is broken and tarnish the democratic process.

Canadian Progressive World (http://s.tt/15Pak)

He also wanted to introduce it a criminal offence to criticize Israel. Imprisonable as 'hate crime'.

Ironically all people of canada stood up including Jewish groups (not associated with zionists) and loudly voiced themselves against this crap.

It shows who's running the show in Canada, US and europe.

No wonder they all beg for attention from Israel when they get 'elected'.

Canada clamps down on criticism of Israel
In an affront to free speech, Canadian committee declares that criticism of Israel should be considered anti-Semitic.
Last Modified: 22 Jul 2011 10:28

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, a staunch supporter of Israeli policy, has described criticism of Israeli as a form of 'new anti-Semitism' [EPA]

Nearly two years after the first hearings were held in Ottawa, the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition fto Combat Anti-Semitism (CPCCA) released a detailed report on July 7 that found that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Canada, especially on university campuses.

While the CPCCA's final report does contain some cases of real anti-Semitism, the committee has provided little evidence that anti-Semitism has actually increased in Canada in recent years. Instead, it has focused a disproportionate amount of effort and resources on what it calls a so-called "new anti-Semitism": criticism of Israel.

Indeed, the real purpose of the CPCCA coalition seems to be to stifle critiques of Israeli policy and disrupt pro-Palestinian solidarity organizing in Canada, including, most notably, Israeli Apartheid Week events. Many of the CPCCA's findings, therefore, must be rejected as both an attack on freedom of speech and freedom of protest, and as recklessly undermining the fight against real instances of anti-Semitism.

The CPCCA and its findings

The Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism (CPCCA) was born out of a conference held in London in February 2009 by the Inter-Parliamentary Committee for Combating Anti-Semitism. Formed in March 2009 and not directly linked to the Canadian government, or to any NGO or advocacy group, the CPCCA included 22 Canadian Parliament members from across party lines. Former Liberal MP Mario Silva chaired the Inquiry Panel and Conservative MP Scott Reid led the Steering Committee.

Between November 2009 and January 2010, the CPCCA held ten separate hearings during which time representatives of various non-governmental organizations, religious institutions, police departments and Canadian and Israeli universities presented papers meant to assess the level of anti-Semitism in Canada. While groups critical of Israel were denied the chance to address the committee, major Zionist organizations like B'nai Brith Canada, Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, and the Canadian Jewish Congress were welcomed.

"Much of today's anti-Semitism manifests in anti-Israel agitation around boycotts, divestment and sanctions," said Avi Benlolo, President and CEO of the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, during a hearing in November 2009. "It deploys an unfair double standard against the Jewish state, singling out of Israel alone for one-sided, harsh criticism and calls for punitive actions."

Throughout the consultation process, the CPCCA regularly focused on Canadian university campuses, which were routinely described as hotbeds of anti-Semitism, where Jewish students or students with pro-Israel leanings are often intimidated and threatened. This accusation was made repeatedly, and included in the CPCCA's final report, despite the fact that Dr. Fred Lowy, President Emeritus of Concordia University in Montreal, stated in his address to the CPCCA that, "by and large, Canadian campuses are safe and are not hotbeds of anti-Semitism of any kind".

In its final report, the CPCCA made about two dozen recommendations on how best to fight anti-Semitism in Canada. While the report states that "criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitic, and saying so is wrong", it also found that "singling Israel out for selective condemnation and opprobrium … is discriminatory and hateful" and many of its recommendations deal with combating this "new anti-Semitism".

A major recommendation issued by the CPCCA was that the Canadian government should promote the working definition of anti-Semitism used by The European Union Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC). This definition categorizes "applying double standards by requiring of [Israel] a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation" as anti-Semitic.

In other words, the CPCCA is supporting a definition whereby individuals who focus their attention on Israeli human rights violations, yet don't level an equal amount of condemnation on other states for their human rights violations, can be labeled as anti-Semitic. This is obviously problematic since Palestine solidarity activists - like any other people - have commitments that make it impossible to engage with every issue they are otherwise interested in. They shouldn't be labeled as anti-Semitic due to their inability to participate in every single human rights struggle happening around the world.

Another dangerous recommendation made by the CPCCA was that Canadian university administrators should condemn "discourse, events and speakers which are untrue, harmful, or not in the interest of academic discourse, including Israeli Apartheid Week". Even the use of the word "apartheid" in relation to Israel is anti-Semitic, the CPCCA found, since it amounts to the "denial of the Jewish people their right to self- determination ... by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor".

This clearly violates freedom of speech and an open exchange of ideas at Canadian universities, and also unfairly and inaccurate labels Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) as anti-Semitic. In reality, IAW has since 2005 brought together respected activists, academics, journalists and cultural figures from around the world, including Judith Butler, Ronnie Kasrils, Noam Chomsky and Ali Abunimah, among others, to openly discuss ideas related to Israel/Palestine.

IAW provides an educational space for understanding Israel's apartheid policies - as evidenced, for example, through the separate legal systems used by Israelis and Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank or the discriminatory land ownership laws operating inside Israel - and supports the growing campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS), which aims to non-violently pressure Israel to respect international law. It is far from the "uniformly well-organized, aggressive [campaign] designed to make the Jewish state and its supporters pariahs" the CPCCA report makes it out to be.

The CPCCA also recommended that the Canadian Committee of Foreign Affairs undertake a study on the United Nations Human Rights Council, "particularly regarding its over-emphasis of alleged human rights abuses by Israel, while ignoring flagrant human rights abuses of other member states".

This clearly demonstrates how the committee has confounded anti-Semitism with criticism of Israel, and is prepared to levy dubious suspicions against UN bodies and tarnish Canada's international standing in the process.

In a statement released on July 8, Thomas Woodley, President of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), said that the CPCCA's recommendations, "if implemented, will inhibit public discussion of Israel's conduct".

"CJPME believes that conclusions and recommendations generated by a process in which the same body - the CPCCA - is prosecutor, jury, and judge, are not credible. Although a few of the witnesses recounted incidents that were indeed indicative of genuine anti-Semitism, many were complaining about merely being exposed to criticism of the Israel's conduct," the CJPME press release stated.

Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) Canada also criticized the committee, stating that "the CPCCA's goal is to criminalize criticism of Israel and Zionism, not to hold impartial hearings. Therefore, we oppose the CPCCA as an ideologically biased organization with an agenda that will harm free speech and human rights activity in Canada. We oppose the CPCCA's Orwellian distortion of anti-Semitism. It is a danger to both Canadian liberties and to the genuine and necessary fight against anti-Semitism."

Reflection of official Canadian policy

While labeling critics of Israeli policy as anti-Semitic is nothing new, the level at which this accusation is now being used in Canadian discourse must be seen as a reflection of the Canadian government's official and current policy on the Middle East.

"When Israel, the only country in the world whose very existence is under attack, is consistently and conspicuously singled out for condemnation, I believe we are morally obligated to take a stand.  Demonization, double standards, de-legitimization, the three D's, it is the responsibility of us all to stand up to them," Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in 2010 at the Ottawa Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism, which was supported by the CPCCA.  Harper added:

"Harnessing disparate anti-American, anti-Semitic and anti-Western ideologies, it targets the Jewish people by targeting the Jewish homeland, Israel, as the source of injustice and conflict in the world and uses, perversely, the language of human rights to do so. We must be relentless in exposing this new anti-Semitism for what it is."

Under Harper, Canada has routinely defended Israeli intransigence and disregard for international law and the human rights of the Palestinian people under its control. In return, trade cooperation and military and security technologies ties have been strengthened between the two states.

In May of this year, it was reported that Harper was adamantly opposed to making any reference to the 1967 borders in a G8 summit statement calling for renewed Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Far-right Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman thanked Harper for his position, and stated, "Canada is a true friend of Israel".

In 2010, Canada announced it would discontinue its financial contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the organization that provides support and resources to approximately 4.7m registered Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the occupied Palestinian territories, and funnel the money into greater policing and security institutions run by the un-elected and corrupt Palestinian Authority leadership instead.

In January 2009, as the Israeli army continued its disproportionate attack on the besieged civilian population in Gaza that left 1,400 Palestinians dead in the span of three weeks, Canada was the only country out of 47 that voted against a motion at the United Nations Human Rights Council condemning the Israeli violence.
In addition to providing diplomatic cover for Israel, the Canadian government has attacked and cut funding to various non-governmental organizations working on issues related to Israel/Palestine, including Kairos Churches and Alternatives International.

Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney, who led the formation of the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism (CPCCA) and is an ex-officio member, has also repeatedly alleged that the Canadian Arab Federation promotes anti-Semitism and hatred. While Kenney never backed up these claims, the Canadian Arab Federation's contracts with the government - which helped finance language programs for Toronto-area immigrants (the majority of whom are of Chinese origin) - were not renewed in 2009.

Undermining the fight against real anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism, like all other forms of racism, is appalling and must be strongly and unequivocally condemned.
But by defining legitimate criticism of Israeli policy and pro-Palestinian activism in Canada as anti-Semitic, the CPCCA is not only threatening free speech and freedom of protest, but it is undermining the fight against real cases of anti-Semitism and weakening the seriousness with which such cases should be dealt.

This is something that Canadians, and people everywhere, should be adamantly against.

Canada’s Effort to Criminalize Criticism of Israel

By Seriously Free Speech | February 11, 2010

Israel’s siege of Gaza has made it a “closed zone” – no access, no exit, cut off from the world. By attempting to shut down criticism of Israel’s practices, Canadian supporters of the government of Israel are creating another “closed zone” in Canada – in which criticism, open debate, and freedom of expression will not be allowed.

Who is doing this? Quietly, without authority from Parliament, an all-party group which calls itself the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism (CPCCA) has been formed to investigate antisemitism in Canada. Not antisemitism as it is traditionally understood: discrimination against or denial of the right of Jews to live as equal members of society. (Members of this Coalition are well aware that traditional antisemitism exists only among fringe groups in Canada.)

Instead, their focus is on something they label as the “new antisemitism” — which they define as criticism of the State of Israel!

WHAT IS THE CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARY COALITION TO COMBAT ANTISEMITISM?

Whenever criticism of Israel increases, as it did in the wake of Israel’s 2006 attack on Lebanon and after the 2009 Gaza massacre, organizations supporting the State of Israel insist that this is a symptom of a “new antisemitism”. This argument is designed to deflect attention from Israel’s real crimes by smearing those who criticise Israel.

The CPCCA, which is integral to the effort to protect Israel from criticism, was formed in March, 2009. It is comprised of twenty-two Parliamentarians, including members of all four parties in the House of Commons. Jason Kenney, the Harper government’s Minister of Citizen, Immigration and Multi-Culturalism and the Conservative government’s point person on Israel, and Irwin Cotler, former Liberal Justice Minister and long time supporter of Israel, are ex-officio members. (For a full list of committee members and more details on this committee go to www.cpcca.ca)

The CPCCA was publicly launched on June 2, 2009 with a call for written submissions “to consider evidence on the nature of antisemitism….and consider further measures that might be usefully introduced”. It received more than 150 submissions. Contrary to commitments made by CPCCA’s executive director Monica Kugelnass, however, most of these submissions have not been posted on its website. Nor has the CPCCA fulfilled its commitment to reveal the source of its funding.

CREATING A CLOSED ZONE IN CANADA*

WHAT IS THE CPCCA UP TO?

The CPCCA began public hearings in Ottawa on Nov. 2, 2009. Almost without exception, none of the many organizations that submitted briefs critical of the CPCCA’s mandate or which criticized the notion of a “new antisemitism” were invited to make presentations to the inquiry panel. Meanwhile, representatives of organizations which did not submit briefs, including university presidents and representatives of police departments, were called as witnesses. Clearly the CPCCA anticipated that these submissions would support their preordained conclusion that the new antisemitism was a large and growing problem in urgent need of legislative response.

The CPCCA will issue a report at the conclusion of these hearings and “anticipates that the Government will respond to this report no later than the fall of 2010″. The Coalition’s stated objective is to include criticism of Israel in an expanded version of existing Hate Crimes legislation. In addition, consideration is being given to doing something similar with respect to Canadian Human Rights legislation. Canada, viewed by Israel as one of its strongest supporters, could then provide a model for similar legislative undertakings in other countries.

WHAT IS AT STAKE?

The essence of the “new antisemitism” campaign is an attempt to conflate discrimination against Jews – something which is as illegitimate as any other form of racism and discrimination and must be opposed – with criticism of the State of Israel, its actions, or its governing ideology, Zionism. It is the view of CPCCA ex-officio member Irwin Cotler, Israel is “the collective Jew among nations.” From this perspective, criticizing Israel is the same as discriminating against Jews.

At a time when racism and bigotry against many communities in Canada — First Nations, Muslims, South Asians and Chinese, Haitians among them – constitute a much greater problem than antisemitism, it is not clear why the Coalition has chosen to focus its attention solely on the latter.

The CPCCA accepts some criticism of Israel may be legitimate. But it also declares that criticism of Israel as a Jewish State – rather than a state where all citizens enjoy equal rights – is inherently antisemitic. That calling Israel’s treatment of its Palestinian citizens apartheid is antisemitic. And that supporting the growing international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign by those determined to change Israel’s behaviour is antisemitic.

Ironically if this expanded definition of antisemitism becomes legislation, it will be possible to criticize the actions of the Canadian government but not those of the government of Israel. Just the fear of being prosecuted is likely to create a “chill” on both university campuses and in the media. But why should Israel be the one country in the world we are not allowed to criticize?

Moreover, branding those who criticise Israel as “antisemitic” is part of a campaign to help organizations such as the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) and B’nai Brith — which provide uncritical support for Israel – put themselves forward as the only legitimate representatives of Canadian Jews. While there are many Jewish organizations and individuals, both within Israel and throughout the world, whose views on Israel differ dramatically from those of the CJC and B’nai Brith, the CPCCA is not interested in hearing from those voices.

The SFSC insists that criticizing Israel is not antisemitic and that restricting debate on the illegal occupation of Gaza and the apartheid nature of Israel society will only allow the continued oppression of the Palestinian people and make a mockery of political free expression in Canada. If we keep silent about the CPCCA, even a document like the one you are reading may ultimately be considered illegal.

Not all zionists are jews. Ever hear of evangelical christians and their undying support for Israel?  ::)

Zionists were originally atheists/secularists. They just played the religious card in their favour. Orthodox Jews were strongly opposed to zionism and zionism was voted in the UN with a resolution that was passed as racism. George Bush Sr. OVER TURNED with forceful pressure this UN resolution (the first and last time in the history of the UN). The majority of the world voted for this UN resolution.

And fyi, washington is run by AIPAC. Your foreign policy is dictated by it. In Canada they have a different name but same shit.

Hollywood? Majority of studios owned by who? Television media owned by who? Only Ruport Murdoch is not a Jew, the rest all staunch zionist jews.

It's not anti-semetism to call it out as it is, when Jewish newspapers and magazines proudly boast about them running these places. The ADL opposes them telling them not to 'reinforce anti semetism with stereotypes' LOL but it's true.. and they know it.

They spend billions in PR to make themselves blood clean and innoscent, and 'good' and 'free' and victims.

You know war is not waged with weapons alone, Israel realized this early on as Israel's image was being tarnished by their continued genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, the wars, etc... so they invested into media moguls and means to control foreign policy of other nations while fear mongering them into subversion.

Did you know that in order to become a congress person you had to write an essay to show what you think of Israel in a positive light. This came out a while ago maybe 3 years ago in public. If you were not pro-israel you'd be fucked over.

Just look at how these politicians ritually FLOCK to Israel wearing yamacas and touching the praying wall before they get elected.

How many US senators or was it congressmen went to israel 80 something?!?! All at the tax payer's expense.

B’nai Brith Canada Welcomes Government Announcement on Diplomatic Relations with the Iranian Regime
For Immediate Release.

Toronto, September 7, 2012

B’nai Brith Canada welcomes the announcement earlier today by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird to cut all diplomatic ties with the regime in Iran, by closing the Canadian Embassy in Tehran and evicting Iranian diplomats in this country. This follows on the heels of the Jewish human rights organization’s call for Senator Don Meredith to sever ties with the Iranian Embassy after he attended one of their events.

Frank Dimant, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada commented:

“Today’s announcement by the Federal Government to cut diplomatic relations with Iran is welcomed by all Canadians of good conscience, who are concerned with the extremist Islamist regime’s ongoing human rights atrocities, its genocidal intent towards the Jewish people, its support for international terrorism and its aggressive nuclear ambitions which threaten not just Israel but the entire Western world.

“We welcome Canada’s move given our call yesterday to alert the public to the stratagems Iran’s diplomats have been using to infiltrate Canadian institutions, intimidate Iranian expatriates and pro-democracy forces, and recruit followers to an agenda of hate, repression and violence.”

Dude, how the fuck do you suppose little ass israel pulls the strings of other countries. Theyre jews.

They don't pull the strings but they should not be underestimated. No one in that region will defeat Israel in a war. They have to gang up on Israel to even have a chance and when they did, 1967, they got their rear ends handed to them.
