US nuclear arsenal to undergo costliest-ever modernization process

The United States is to treat its nuclear arsenal to the costliest modernization process ever, with the projected expenditure estimated to stand at USD hundreds of billions.

The Washington Post reported the prospect of the wholesale overhaul on Saturday, saying the country’s 5,113-strong arsenal of nuclear warheads is to undergo an upgrade and maintenance process as part of the plan.

The paper added that the plan also includes renovation of the aging nuclear facilities, and replacement of old delivery systems.

The daily withheld the figure on the price tag, but Washington think-tank Stimson Center has estimated the cost to stand at USD 352 billion in the least over the next decade. Others have said the figure could far exceed the amount.

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and I haven’t seen a moment like this,” said Thomas P. D’Agostino, who leads the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

The stockpile houses seven types of weapons, upgrading only the B61 thermonuclear bomb among which is likely to cost USD 10 billion over five years, while Washington would have to lavish USD 110 billion to build 12 replacements for the aging Ohio-class submarines.

The country is, meanwhile, spending USD 162 million per airplane to build a nuclear-capable fleet of the F-35 strike aircraft to replace the existing warplanes.

The US is the only country to have ever used atomic bombs against another nation.

The prospective overhaul flies in the face of the country’s persisting economic woes and the international calls for a nuclear-weapon-free world.

Saw one in Dayton, OH in a museum. Pretty cool. Reached up and touched the underside of the wing.  Don't know if I wasn't supposed to do that lol

How am I not surprised. Praising yourself and carrasing your murderous fetish and egos

The American death machine. Happy of blaming others while murdering and destroying the world.

It's funny tht the US and Israel are fully armed with nuclear weapons.. and Iran is the one actually insisting on a nuclear weapons free middle-east and the world... yet Iran is the one that is being bullied by two armed to the teeth violent nations. The US and Israel.

iran is the armpit of teh ME.  Iran is not responsible enough to handle nukes.

The leadership  is trembling everyday as they walk a fine line of losing their power in their own country.

They don't have nor want nukes. You on the other hand are drooling at the prospect of mass murder.

Iran also belongs to an ancient civillization that far pre-dates ameirca's 'long' toddler diaper history. Iran has also not invaded any of its neighbours in any recent history. Israel has invaded all of its neighbours. The US has been at war with virtually the whole world for the last century or so

No they are a people who don't want nuclear weapons but who you falsely accuse of doing as such while you have nuclear weapons and are the only nation who has used them on civillians.

Your 'ally' israel has over 400 nuclear weapons (stolen from your reactors initially) and is the only real threat to the middle-east alongside yourself.

Irony? You are 'upgrading' your nuclear weapons while asking others (who dont have them nor want them) not to have them. Hmm

Upgrade inst really the right term this is largely a life extension program and the military trying to keep 60s and 70s era technology still running.  It would probably be much cheaper, better and safer to build new stuff but we aren't allowed.  Then again with the government purchasing system so outrageously out of control maybe it wouldn't be.
