today marks the beginning of the second month of being on my own. finding out all kinds of things about budgeting and what not. wondering what kinds of tips you guys have. and interested in sharing stories about the whole "on my own for the first time" deal.

my diet is nothing but white rice, chicken breast, and fish oil.

this is what 40 dollars gets me at costco. 25lbs of rice. 400 caps of fish oil. and 10lbs of chicken.

the rice and fish oil will last a month. but the chicken lasts only 4 days.

Not true whatsoever.  How do you suppose you`d make anything if you followed that nonsensical approach?

Not sure how your supermarket layout is Adonis but most supermarkets work that way, cookies, cerials, chips , sodas, can all be found in the isles

Yeah I have some advice.  Learn how to cook.
So many ways to chicken, so many ways to cook fish, so many ways to cook beef and pork.

And then he can always eat oatmeal and boiled eggwhites for breakfast.

Are you sure you need to eat that much chicken?  That's like 340 g of protein a day.

I think the best approach is gather your recipes and then make a list of what you need, then purchase.

Question: do people on the West Coast have trouble getting pork?

Purchasing coffee in bulk saves money too.  Getting anything in bulk saves really.  I always read the supermarket specials that we get here and then go to either coles or woolies to get the best savings.  So basically shop around to save money.

Learn how to bone and process your own meat. Many times, it comes out a lot cheaper if you buy the whole chicken, fish, etc..... and take five minutes to break it down. Also learn to like other parts of the animal, dark meat is always dirt cheap, and the less leaner cuts of meat. And nutrition wise, they're not horrible for you.

Also, if you can fit it in your kitchen, buy a small freezer, and buy meat on sale in bulk.

And get a nice selection of sauces. A good sauce, marinade, etc... can make even a bland meal bearable.

mixing with tomatosauce or bakedbeans works. that's what i used to do if i didn't chug it down with the blender/juice mix

.

It takes 2-4 minutes to debone a chicken, maybe a minute more for a good sized fish. It's not a big deal.

You can endure it right from the can with some old bay seasoning on it, a little bit of Dukes mayo helps a lot.

Yeah I have some advice.  Learn how to cook.
LOL, dude, i would absolutely demolish you in an iron chef cook off dude. without a recipe in front of you detailing exactly what to cook and exactly how to cook it/spice it you have no idea how to cook anything! me on the other hand, i can cook absolutely anything and do it from scratcj with no recipe whatsoever and after one or two tries i will have perfected it to a degree that i could sell the recipe to a 5 star restaurant for a few hunded thousand dollars.  :P (ok thats exaggerated a little bit  ;D )

Yes learn how to cook.  Also add in veges and fruits, they provide good essential vitamins and nutrients.
i know how to cook amazingly well.  fruits and veggies.. no room for them in the budget, or the fridge (mini fridge and mini freezer) !!!! lol

Are you sure you need to eat that much chicken?  That's like 340 g of protein a day.
2.5lb chicken pe day is 220 grams protein.. i eat one chicken breats every 4-5 hours..

Purchasing coffee in bulk saves money too.  Getting anything in bulk saves really.  I always read the supermarket specials that we get here and then go to either coles or woolies to get the best savings.  So basically shop around to save money.
yeah i do get everyhting in bulk and look for the best deals.. costco seems ot have the best prices

Costco has 8 packs of solid white albacore tuna(blue can) fo 10bucks, put with your rice and soy sauce,$1.25 a meal
i checked and  $ per gram of protein tuna is actually more expensive than chicken breast !
