President Obama offered himself as “eye candy” to The View today when he taped the show during his trip to New York for the United Nations meeting.

“I told folks I’m just supposed to be eye candy here for you guys,” Obama said, according to the pool report, in a joke about being the only male on the show.

More seriously, Obama also dodged another question about whether the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Libya constituted terrorism. “There’s no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn’t just a mob action,” Obama said. “What’s clear is that, around the world, there are still a lot of threats out there.”

The president did not, to judge from the press pool, describe the tragedy as a “terrorist attack,” as his White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has done.

Obama offers himself up as 'eye candy' on 'The View'

 Sep 24, 2012 7:01pm EDT

By Mark Felsenthal

NEW YORK, Sept 24 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday sought to woo women voters at a taping of the daytime talk show "The View," by flirting with his wife and bearing gifts for the hosts, but he could not escape tough questions on the economy that have dominated the election.

When host and veteran journalist Barbara Walters kidded Michelle Obama about bringing the president as her "date," Obama quipped, "I've been told I'm just eye candy here."

The appearance, which will air on Tuesday on the ABC television network, marks the first time the Obamas have appeared together on the one-hour show, which features four female hosts, including Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg, and is popular with middle-income women voters.

The taping in New York was squeezed in before Obama's obligations at the United Nations General Assembly's annual meeting, where he is delivering a Tuesday morning speech.

During the show, the Obamas joked about their upcoming anniversary and presented the hosts with White House cloth napkins, golf balls, candy and bottles of Obama's home-brewed beer. The couple's 20th anniversary will fall on the day of the first presidential debate, Oct. 3.

"Our first wedding anniversary, I totally forgot," Michelle dead-panned.

The president jokingly responded: "Cold."

Obama and his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, are both fighting hard for the women's vote.

In 2008, middle-class women were key to Obama's presidential win, and Obama has worked to get them to the polls again. His campaign this summer renewed its focus on social issues such as birth control, women's health and reproductive rights.

Democrats have accused Republicans of declaring a "war on women," while Romney's campaign has slammed Obama's policies for weakening the economy and hurting women in the work force.

During the taping, host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a vocal Republican supporter, asked if the Obama administration had failed the middle class.

"Everything that we've done has been designed to deal with not only the immediate crisis, but make sure that the middle class, which had been struggling for a decade before that, is feeling more secure," Obama said. "The problems that were created aren't going to be solved overnight."

Hasselbeck also pressed Obama about his previous comments that he cannot end Washington gridlock just from the inside, telling him: "You are Washington, you're about as inside as it gets."

"The idea is that you can't change Washington just from the inside, you've got to mobilize the American people. When the American people are engaged and involved, then change always happens," Obama replied.

"We can't play just an inside game where special interests and lobbyists and big money and folks writin' big checks, they're the only ones who have influence."

Romney's wife Ann will also make a stab at winning over television viewers chatting with comedian Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" in her first late-night interview on Tuesday, according to the NBC network.

Ann Romney will give her thoughts on family life and the coming election, the network said in a statement.

Obama makes room for ‘The View’
By Dana Milbank, Published: September 24
As heads of government arrived in New York on Monday to attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama also made his way to Manhattan but to see a different group of world leaders: Barbara, Elisabeth, Joy, Sherri and Whoopi.

It bordered on scandalous that Obama, joined by the first lady, would make time to sit down with the women of “The View” even as he declined foreign leaders’ requests to meet with him one on one in New York this week. (He left that menial task to his secretary of state.) But Mitt Romney isn’t in an ideal position to press Obama on his priorities.

This is because the Republican presidential nominee and his wife, Ann, just spent some quality time on the set of “Live! With Kelly and Michael,” where they discussed, among other things, Snooki, peanut butter and chocolate milk, their toothpaste-squeezing techniques, Romney’s singing of western tunes while on horseback and what the candidate wears to bed. Then there’s Ann Romney’s scheduled appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on Tuesday — the same day Obama’s appearance on “The View” airs.

The candidates tell you that this campaign is about big issues. If you believe that, you’re being snookied.

Romney doesn’t dabble in messy things such as what precisely he would do in Afghanistan or with the tax code. But he has made time to do interviews with Leno, David Letterman and People magazine in addition to Kelly and Michael. Obama hasn’t held a formal news conference in the White House in more than six months, but he has found places on his calendar for Leno, Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, People, “Entertainment Tonight” and, of course, “The View.”

In this “Jersey Shore” culture, it’s perhaps inevitable that candidates would try to reach voters by chatting about the banal and the prurient. But this doesn’t make it any less depressing.

This summer, Obama chatted with New Mexico radio hosts about which superpower he’d like to have (“to be able to speak any language”), his favorite workout song (Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”) and his favorite chile (“the classic red”). This wasn’t long after Michelle Obama volunteered to People the couple’s bedtime ritual: “He’s like, ‘Ready to be tucked?’ I’m like, ‘Yes I am.’ ”

There’s apparently no use in taking the high road. In his secretly recorded speech to donors, Romney explained that he wouldn’t appear on “Saturday Night Live” because it’s “not presidential” or “The View” because most of the hosts “are sharp-tongued and not conservative,” or Letterman because he “hates me because I’ve been on Leno more than him.”

But after the “View” ladies complained on air, Romney’s campaign sent word that he would appear on the show in October.

Whatever happens there, it probably couldn’t be less presidential than the Romneys’ experience with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. Romney, misunderstanding a question, at first suggested that he would like Gene Hackman to play his wife in a movie. He then praised Hackman’s performance in “The Birdcage” — a movie about drag queens that is probably not a favorite of his conservative supporters.

Ann Romney spoke about walking in on George W. Bush in the White House while he was having a massage. When the Romneys were asked, “What does Mitt wear to bed?” the candidate replied: “I think the best answer is as little as possible.”

Romney did demonstrate some pop-culture literacy when he noted that reality-TV star Snooki had lost weight. Obama had confessed on “The View” two years ago that he didn’t know who Snooki was.

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, gained further small-talk cred when they confided to People that they liked the George Clooney movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” The pair also discussed Ryan’s purchase of a new chain saw and his hobby of “noodling” — trying to catch catfish with bare hands.

The banality circuit has its perils, though. When Michelle Obama tried last month to make a joke about Leno’s dietary habits, it came across as if she were scolding her fellow guest, Olympian Gabby Douglas, for eating McDonald’s. The president went out to set the record straight — in a radio interview with Iowa’s “Big Ken and Colleen.” He also used that forum to talk about back-to-school shopping, his girls’ summer camp, and his boyhood desires to be an architect or a professional basketball player.

Little could he have imagined back then that he would instead grow up to reach an even higher station in life: regular guest on “The View.”

Obamas 'View' Interview: President Brushes Off Elisabeth Hasselbeck's Tough Question (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post Rebecca Shapiro
First Posted: 09/25/2012 12:55 pm EDT Updated: 09/26/2012 7:48 am EDT

President Obama brushed past a tough question posed by "View" co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck during his interview on the ABC daytime talk show.

The Obamas appeared in their first-ever daytime joint interview on Tuesday. The co-hosts took turns asking both soft and hard questions during the discussion, which was pre-taped on Monday.

Hasselbeck, who has asked the president tough questions during "View" appearances in the past, prefaced her question by saying, "These tough questions get tougher to ask you because I, wholeheartedly, do really like you both...I need to let everybody know." She then listed various statistics about the economy and suffering middle class.

"Some would ask is it unfair to assume that Mitt Romney may fail the middle class when statistically speaking, they'd argue that your administration is failing the middle class," Hasselbeck said. "How do you respond to that?"

"Well look, we've gone through the toughest economy, the worst financial crisis and the worst recession since the Great Depression," Obama said. "And that's not a surprise to anybody. We've been living it for the past four years, and everything that we've done has been designed to deal with not only the immediate crisis but to make sure that the middle class...is feeling more secure."

He added, "The question now I think for the American people [is] how are we going to move forward in a way that assures that if you work hard in this country, if you take responsibility for yourself and your family, you can get ahead. And what this campaign is really going to be about is a choice between two fundamentally different visions about how you do that."

Even Jon Stewart ripped into him for going on The View. It's been over 20 years since a US president has not taken any meetings at this UN gathering.  ::)

A Huge 386,000 Jobs

As if to pile on to what may be the worst two week period a presidential campaign has ever suffered, Governor Mitt Romney has now lost one of the campaign’s key narratives.

Romney can no longer claim that President Obama’s first term in office has resulted in a loss of jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is out with its annual update to benchmark unemployment numbers (for the more cynical among you, the BLS does this every fall so this is not a number being ‘timed’ for the election), and the numbers reveal that 386,000 more non-farm jobs were actually created between March, 2011 and April 2012 than what had been originally reported.

Obama's #1 goal is political survival.

What happens if he meets with the leader of Egypt today?

#1) nothing is going to be achieved in 15 minutes of public face time that can't be accomplished quietly on the phone
#2) Romney, Rush, Ryan, Levin, etc will have a field day with obama meeting with the muslim brotherhood, etc 5 weeks before the election.

Just as Romney isn't meeting with controversial figures this month.  Is anyone surprised here?
