Obama campaign: Adjustments will be made in debate strategy

Obama campaign: Adjustments will be made in debate strategy By Amie Parnes - 10/04/12 12:06 PM ET

Adjustments will have to be made in President Obama's debate strategy, his advisers said Thursday, the morning after the president stumbled in his first showdown with Mitt Romney.

David Axelrod, Obama’s senior campaign strategist, said they are going to take "a hard look" at Obama’s debate performance and that they’ll “have to make some judgments about where to draw the lines in these debates and how to use our time.”

“It’s like a playoff in sports,” Axelrod said to reporters on a conference call, adding that there are strategic judgments “that have to be made and we’ll make them.”

Axelrod's comments reflected an overall sentiment from Obama world — from his staunchest loyalists to donors and even some aides — who tried to make sense of the thrashing they had witnessed Wednesday night.

They conceded the president was listless and seemingly tired and did nothing to combat a fiery Romney, who was on the attack and dominated much of the debate. And they called Wednesday’s debate a missed opportunity for Obama in terms of putting the race away, after a strong month coming off of the Democratic National Convention.

“I’ve put down my paper bag and I am breathing again,” said one former administration official, who readily acknowledged that Obama endured a serious thumping in the debate. Another former Obama aide said, “it was obvious for everybody that his energy level was low — especially for the president.”

“Look, it was just a terrible performance,” an Obama donor said, adding Thursday morning “felt like a hangover and no alcohol was involved.”

Even former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell weighed in, saying Obama “looked lethargic, disinterested, passive.

"I can't believe the president didn't fight back. He had so many openings... he let [Romney] get away with one misstatement after another without fighting back, didn't mention the 47 percent. When Romney mentioned his accountant he had nothing to say. If there was a strategy it was a noncombatant strategy and it makes no sense."

Obama aides quickly sought to push back on the narrative that the president flubbed the debate in a big way.

On the conference call with reporters, Axelrod called Romney an “artful dodger” who failed to answer questions about his policies in the debate and that Obama can’t afford to “allow someone to manhandle the truth.”

Axelrod credited Romney for a “vigorous” performance in Colorado.

“Governor Romney came to give a performance and he gave a good performance. The problem was none of it was rooted in fact,” he said.

“He may win the Oscar for his performance last night but he’s not going to win the presidency for his performance.”

Romney's campaign shot back that the Obama staff offered no defense of the president.

“The Obama campaign’s conference call today was just like the President’s performance last night. The campaign, like the President, offered no defense of the President’s first term record or vision for a second term, and instead, offered nothing but false attacks, petulant statements, and lies about Governor Romney’s record," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg.

Those who know Obama say he, probably more than anyone, understands what went wrong on Wednesday night.

“I don’t think his advisers need to tell him anything – the president is a competitive guy, “He knows what happened. He’ll know what to do for the next one.”

Economic Debate - where romney has all the experience/skill = Romney 10, Obama 0.

Foreign Debate - where romney has minimal experience = Romnye less than 10.  More chance of stepping in shit, more chance of obama to brag about the things he did achieve.  More chance of romney stepping in shit trying to politicize the bad things our nation has faced.

While the president may have had a brief moment of exuding his presidential attributes with Medicare, he was often dominated by the litany of facts thrown at him by Romney highlighting the economic pain his presidency has inflicted upon the nation.  The right hooks Romney delivered on jobs, the economy, and the crony capitalism connected to green energy rendered Obama’s statement on corporate welfare for oil companies moot.  Furthermore, Obama seemed to sabotage his own efforts to scare seniors with the false narrative that Romney wants to destroy Medicare.  He agreed that Romney’s reforms to our entitlement programs aren’t that much different from his policies.

As a result, the president gave Romney the death stare midway through the debate.  There’s no doubt that the stare, coupled with the puckered up lips, were indicators that Romney got under Obama’s skin.  In an ironic twist, Obama seems to have become John McCain concerning the feelings of indignation towards those who dare to have opposing views on the issues.  For Obama, Romney disagreeing with him isn’t just wrong – it’s somehow reprehensible.

I think Obama reacts that way because he was indoctrinated from early age, he have never even tried to understand opposing viewpoints. He has such a long road to wisdom and maturity still ahead thanks to him being treated like the next best thing his whole life.

and yet Obama is still going to win in 2012 because every single African American and every white-guilt liberal is going to vote for him.

Romney was lying quite a bit, He also just denied any allegations his way. This is really odd, it's a tactic that could backfire though. Not that lying doesn't help in politics though

You are pretty much mistaken. Freeloaders? Deadbeats? They are not the same as the poor who for causes beyond their control need help. To liberal retards they are the same.

The reason why everyone thinks Romney won the debate is because they had very poor expectations for him and very high expectations for Obama.

Romney performed very well. He was enthusiastic and he was eager. He has thrown off his ultra-conservative shackles that he was put into during the primary season and last night revealed his inner moderate. I was very happy to see that. I wont mind a Romney presidency if he continues to be the man he was last night.

Obama performed horribly. He appeared tired, lacked enthusiasm, and seemed rather jaded with the whole debate process. substantively he did good, but it was hard to pay attention and absorb the substance because of his poor delivery.

just want to point out that romney uttered several lies already shot down by polifact particularly

http://freakoutnation.blogspot.ca/2012/10/debate-night-mitt-romney-uses.html

Why people allow this shit to go on unchallenged from a presidential candidate is beyond me.

Romney also told more lies in the first 30 minutes according to polifact then Obama said the whole debate. It's really odd that anyone is lying at all.

Because Obama doesn't know any better, didn't have his shit together, and without a scripted response couldn't refute that. Seriously, he better have his shit together next time, or he will look like a fool again. What does that tell you about him?

It's all for nothing though if he(Romney) doesn't win the next one. I hope it is the case he crushes him again in the subsequent debates, or it goes back to what it was Monday, looking like Obama was invincible. I truly believe this got the undecided and the disenfranchised Republicans the second wind to get out there and cast a vote, whereas they may have just sat at home like some dog suffering from learned helplessness.

the fuck are you talking about... romney wants the USA to protect themselves from a world where their interventions to better things always end badly because the people that are helped in fact dont deserve it most of the time. It s about time all of those who shit on the big bad white old USA learn what happen when they dont get any help anymore from him. Let muslims an chinese take over eurasia for the next century, then nuke them all without any remorse. Romney loves his country and thinks it's the best place on earth, he s sick of lazy bums whining and parasiting those who work. He's proud of the workers, those who make america shine worldwide. It's about time the USA stop helping everyone and let others rot in their shit to teach them a lesson. This is all is needed to understand about "foreign debates". Romeny cares about the USA and wouldnt hesitate to at best ignore, at worse, nuke, some assholes who contribute nothing to mankind. That's exactly what the USA, israel, and the world, need.

I don't see anything moderate about appointing Supreme Court justices who are on record opposing Roe v Wade.

I thought you had libertarian inclinations. Do women have a right to privacy or don't they? Are you sure appointing multiple people to the S.C. who oppose such a right -- people who may remain there for decades -- won't have any impact on women?
