They were just young jewish kids who wanted to become rich and famous.
How would they go about getting attention (when they weren't really exceptional musicians) in a time when there were so many other rockbands and such hard competition?
They did something that was not done before, created these personas with outlandish suits, facepaint, and shock theatrics on stage.
The Demon-character breathing fire, spitting red paint etc, fire from the guitars etc
They didn't care one bit about Satannish or Mephistopheles.
The only thing they believed in was fame, money and wealth.
