BULLSHIT! There were many other risks, including somethign which actually did happen: Baumgartner got in a flat spin, from which recovery can be nearly impossible and which could have killed him before he came down. Baumgartner got out of with a combination of skill and luck.

I'm sure that many skydivers could have trained to do this. I doubt that "a large chunk" could have, or that it would only take them a week. But I'm sure that any getbigger could have done. Some might have even been able to do it without a spacesuit - just by flexing.
Wow, I can not believe what I am reading, this guy thinks what the man did is no big deal?  ???

Way to put him in his place avxo. Ya that spinning violently at 600mph would make the average human black out instantly for sure. What a dumbass, whoever started this thread.

That footage is amazing. He's well into the jump, coming down at over 700 miles per hour and the curvature of the earth is still very pronounced. Wow. That flat spin must have been terrifying.

More of an engineering feat, we could have used a monkey instead of a human, but it probably didn't matter.

OP is such a fucking fool.

This dude is the first human to break the speed of sound without any propulsion aides. It is quite fucking incredible.

Okay lets leave the technicalities on the side, they are amazing , and nobody doubts that Baumgartner has elephantitis but....
Why was his jump so amazing?
He sat in a capsule, dropped from door at 30k feet, pulled a string which opened his parachute and that's it, how is that amazing, I fact I would say there are thousands of people that "could" do the same.

Somebody freediving 100 meters on a single breath of air is amazing, the stratos fall was a massively hyped advertisement.
At least this wasn't part of the 2 billion dollar Mars Rover  ::)

Of course you could have. It's trivial to teach a monkey to recover from a flat spin during a free fall at 700mph. Besides, the monkey would fit in a smaller capsule!

In all seriousness, what you said is a load of bunk; the engineering behind the space suit he wore was cool and cutting edge; no argument there. But to write the human element off, as you did, is, to be blunt, bullshit.

Nobody is saying that Baumgartner cured cancer or that he should get a Nobel (although, considering who they give the Peace Prize to lately...). But he did do something amazing - the helmet cam views as he steps out of the capsule and steps off are proof of that.

Most people would pass out from the blood rush.  It takes a person with a special makeup to withstand that speed to not just throw up in their mask and die.  For some reason it would seem easier to jump from that height when you can't see shit than when your 10000 feet up and the ground is staring you in the face.  jumping from where he jumped is like jumping into a void.

Okay so I have no idea what I am talking about since I have never jumped out of anything higher than uhmm i dunno, however a guy here in my job who's a lot into para jumping and has done the occasional base jump told me that you are actually not aware of the speed until you reach a certain heights - does the speed (if you fall straight down or forward) and no G force in involved (rapidly changing direction) has any impact on the human body at all?

Whether you "feel" the speed is not the issue. The speed was only an incidental thing in this jump because he broke a speed record.

As for g-forces: The quintessential characteristic of free fall is that you are under a constant downward acceleration of 1g. He was subjected to a constant 1 g  acceleration.

Once he got into the flat spin, shortly after he exceeded Mach 1, the centrifugal force (which isn't really a force per se, but let's not be pedantic) was high enough that there were concerns that he would suffer loss of consciousness.

This was a jump taken to extremes, and that's what makes it noteworthy and merited serious scientific attention. NASA, for example, will be assessing the spacesuit that Baumgartner used and the viability of astronanuts performing emergency spacecraft evacuation jumps (although don't expect anyone jumping from the ISS, which at 230 miles is almost exactly 10 times higher than Baumgartner's capsule).

There is a terminal velocity that you would get in the regular atmosphere that most parachutists hit, but this guy jumped from the edge of space.  He could black out immediately.
