the existence of government causes individuals to lose their motivation and moral compass and is essentially harmful to society.

My friends and I were into reading Ayn Rand, Aldous Huxley and Jean Paul Sartre when we were all Juniors in High School. In fact, I even acted in Sartre's play "No Exit" in drama class. On weekends, we'd  dress all in black and drive over to Sunset Strip to the coffee houses where we played chess and occasionally and randomly proclaim, "Who is John Galt?" like it actually had some special meaning.  We thought we were beatnik intellectuals. Can you imagine?

When I stopped taking life so seriously, I started reading novels by Terry Southern and Patrick Dennis. Terry Southern's Candy is a total kick in the pants. If you've never read Terry Southern, you should. Patrick Dennis' First Lady a pictorial novel about a fictional first family will have you screaming with laughter. Gore Vidal's Myra Breckenridge is another fun read. Tom Robbins' Still Life With Woodpecker is also a lot of fun as are all of Robbins' books.

These days, I read Gregory Maguire who wrote Wicked and a series of other fantasies, most all of which I have read. Another fun author is David Sedaris who wrote Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, which is a collection of 22 essays. Chuck Palahniuk, another whacked out writer who wrote Fight Club is a pretty good read too, plus he hails from Portland.

Amazingly true that art reflects a philosophy.  Probably why so few movies are good to me these days.  All altruist facist and against the independant high self esteem producer.

Just who gets to be called a 'philosopher'?

Someone who publishes a book describing therr system.

I will say this.

Government school picked some of the most awful books ever and held them up as great literature.

Jack Vance for example is a great author.  Never mentioned once in school.

Travesty.

Henry George is briliant, but never mentioned in economics class.

Weird.

There's a reason why Rand tops the list of every "Who do you wish the public would stop referring to as a 'philosopher'?" given to academic philosophy departments.

it saddens me how quickly most of you dismiss these ideas. I am an Obama supporter and a Democrat and I think there is definitely something worth considering in the idea of valuing personal liberty, voluntary action, limited government, non-coercion, etc.

every time I ask a Rand supporter where her ideas and ideal have been put into action I can get get an answer

Somolia has a very limited government so I guess their citizens are highly motivated and with a superbly calibrated moral compass......all thanks to lack of goverment and a high amount of civil liberty
