Cancel it.

Almost all of Manhattan under 39th street is dead in terms of power. The gas supply is about to run out. Staten Island is DESTROYED. 40 - 50% of Long Island doesn't have power. Travel times are 3 - 4x longer than normal, but they're going to close the Verrazano bridge for the Marathon, and pull doctors and police out to watch over the runners.

The people should take to the streets and disrupt that entire route.  It's a travesty.

Sports seem to always go above human dignity and morals. Look at all the idiots at sport games who get drunk, fight, boo injured players on the other team, or make stupid remarks when a player they dont like gets sick or gets hurt. I will never understand the appeal to sports. It's not you who is winning the game. You're not getting paid. Seriously, get a grip.

If they are disrupting the only roads and bridges that are open then yes. Otherwise who cares. Should I not go to the gym until everyone else has power? Its over, the recovery process has started. Life goes on. Its not like these runners are taking time off from their jobs at the power companies. I say run the race and lets move forward instead of sitting around crying.

Staten Island Hotel Refuses To Evict Storm Refugees For Visiting Marathoners

The owner of the Staten Island, New York’s Hilton Garden Inn is refusing to evict local refugees from Hurricane Sandy, even though his decision has drawn fire from marathoners who made reservations to stay and run the 43rd annual ING New York City Marathon this weekend.

“How do I tell people who have no place to go, that have no home, no heat, that you have to leave because I have to make room for somebody that wants to run the marathon?” asked hotel owner Richard Nicotra. “I can’t do that,” he said.

Mary Wittington, the president of the New York Road Runners, the group is sponsoring the marathon, agrees that displaced New Yorkers should take precedence over visiting runners.

“Marathoners will find a way,” she said in an interview. “They’re coming here now in support.”

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gregorymcneal/2012/11/02/cancel-the-marathon/ -

"And let’s not forget the mess that has to be cleaned up.  No, not Sandy storm cleanup, rather who is going to cleanup after the marathoners?  After all, last year there were “114.29 tons of litter and debris, 6.34 tons of paper, and 2.98 tons of metal, glass and plastic” requiring “173 uniformed Sanitation Workers and 20 Supervisors who will operate 39 collection trucks, 41 mechanical brooms, seven dump trucks, 21 push brooms and back pack blowers, four front end loaders, and a fleet of small pickup vehicles to remove the marathon’s refuse and recyclables.”  Dump trucks, front end loaders, nearly 200 government workers, and Mayor Bloomberg wants us to believe that picking up Gatorade cups is the best use of government time and resources?"

colin cowherd said it perfectly -

If ONE police officer or generator has to be taken away from helping NYers without power - and given to a runner - then it is a mistake.

Now that Jay Cutler basically has a "runners physique", does anyone know if he will be running in the NY Marathon?

Bloomberg is a fucking moron..It really is pathetic

Gets hit with the biggest storm of the century and decides to hold the event 5 days after  ::)

Lots of internet blogs saying that if the marathon is held, the marathon runners WILL be assaulted.

No.  Would you want them to cancel the Olympia because of a little rain storm?

I understand the appeal of sports--to a degree.  I do not understand it to the degree evident in the US. I'd much rather play a sport (any sport--even one I've never played before or have no skill at) than watch it on TV or from the sidelines.  I guess it's just a difference in personality type.  I also do not understand the hopelessly fat and out of shape men who are dedicated sports fans... spending their time, money, on attending sporting events, buying magazines, and photographing athletes as if their lives depended on it.  One sees this in the world of bodybuilding a lot.  Strange.  :-\

NYC Marathon was just announced, it's been canceled due to so much controversy around it! Good job New Yorkers, we need some sense of normalcy. We have people who are cold and hungry, they come first!
