His relationship with J.Weider was what hurt him.... Just imagine,you being 3 times mr.O and then Joe brings Arnold who loses to Zane in Miami then to Oliva at the O but keeps being on the covers of all Weider publication the star,Austrian Oakblah,blah, having the best angles in every picture while Sergio ..... already a champ 3 times!!! never was featured on a cover of Weider only the lousy pics of him on back of a mag or small article WTF !!! or only the negative stuff about Sergio.......even in 1995 (the Mr.O reunion) Weider called Sergio fat and disrespected him only thanking Arnold for being there.......
My respect to Sergio and Serge 2 bodybuilders that didnt kiss Joe Weider's ass
I read somewhere years ago that Weider had said "I put Oliva on the cover, I sell x. I put Arnold on the cover I sell 3x." |

That one of him was from the 1971 MR O where he was "allowed" bye the IFBB to "Guess pose" but not actually Compete against Arnold, this MM below is 1 year Later in Japan where IMO he was Possibly in his Greatest ever Shape Conditioning wise Feathered Delts and all...now imagine this Physique in this sort of shape on the Gear these days.........

The burial will be on November 20th with a 10 AM Mass at St. Gertrude Catholic Parish 1420 West Granville Avenue Chicago, IL 60660-1810 #773-764-3621
Sergio's Memorial Fund was approved to Frank Merchante. It seems that they're going to try to have a memorial after the real funeral like they did with Robert Kennedy.

We just returned from Sergio's wake in Chicago, and the photos there of Sergio's home life with his children moved me immensely. I spoke with Sergio's daughter and she talked of her father with tenderness, 'my best friend, I loved him so much', she said, and that choked me up....no talk of his Myth greatness, just a daughter mourning her dad. The funeral is tomorrow which I plan to attend with Bill Seno.

Sad news.  71 is a pretty good run, but in today's day and age he should have been blessed with at least ten more years. Its mostly out of my hands, but I'd like to believe I can make it to the centenarian stage with most of my mental faculties, and able to bathe and feed myself.  That's what I strive for, and I've at least got genetics in my favor. Although quality of years always trumps the quantity of years for a life well lived.
Sergio was one the "great ones", whose physique and awe-inspiring photography, for which he was the subject, will live on forever.   |
