There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable, I simply...am not...there.

Read the book gentlemen.  The movie barely scratched the surface at how sadistic PB really was.

Come on, El Diablo. There are a lot more important problems than the book to worry about

I swear every friend of mine in NY that's in finance has the entire script memorized.  Such a cult classic.

Read it years ago, and yes, you get the impression that Bret Easton Ellis didn't like his mother very much.

The part of the book where he stabs the young boy in the throat actually disturbed me. And I watch www.theync.com for shits and giggles. That part of the book does not erase from the memory easily. I was profoundly affected.

AmPsy is Brett Easton Ellis' best work, in my opinon, having only read two of his books. I'm still not sure what to make of Glamorama. I desperately want to like it, but I'm befuddled by it. Anyone here read it?

Nice point of view Purge, but trust me, i'm over 18, i've been fighting my whole life.... Been getting beat up, paid my dues...
I am into MMA and G4P, and still getting beat up... Beating the meat... but even in my 40s, i'm still as lethal as i was in my 20s...

It's been a long road... Lots of pillowtalk.. But i've been there.. when it started, was there to help build it, build the strong foundation we have now...

I could have been one of the Silva's of the 70's.. One of the Mezgers of the 17thcentury, sweating in those black bags despite the upper management, the occult, the religious mistical aspect....

Now at 50, am still beating it.. Still deadly.... Still got the Eye of the Tiger...

Defines who i am...

Peace to the Four Winds...

As _bruce_ suggests above with regard to its "cult" status among shallow, self-absorbed, neurotically scorekeeping professionals, yeah, it pretty much increases douchebag serotonin levels.

For others, the violence, narcissism, and psychosis of its charming and witty protagonist is alluring and amusing.

And for more literary types, it's a postmodern critique of consumer and corporate culture wherein you cannot trust any sort of identity and narrative; especially, as the novel's "end"* implies, self-identity and self-narrative** (of course, there are other interpretations).

* The novel ends, "THIS IS NOT AN EXIT."
** The film ends with Bateman reflecting that his "confession has meant nothing."

It was quite original and " special " for it's time.
