The real test for a strength coach should be if he can a very good sportsman and make him great, or if he can take a great sportsman that has grown stagnant, and make them great again. If he can do either of those things, then it is money well spent.

That being said, if you see a guy with weak credentials come out of nowhere, and suddenly he's in demand, 10 out of ten, he's a connected drug guru, nothing more.

I've met Freddy twice and had the pleasure of helping.corner with one of his other coaches,.Eric Brown with one of my fighters. I respect the hell out of both of them. But he wasn't referring to all.sports, just boxing. If he were referring to other sports, I would have said he was dead wrong. I've always maintained, that I would never train a boxer.

Freddie roach gets right down to the point. seems like all he says when manny is in his corner is "OK Manny we gotta put this guy on his ass" we all know this is the point of boxing so his advice is spot on! problem is anyone of us could tell manny the same thing. I cannot count how many times freddy will tell manny "all right son we need this round put him on his ass for me ok"
or "ok manny you gotta put him on his ass or something" very basic coaching we are all capable of giving. But Freddie cracks me up! He loves the sport and is a nice guy! I wish all his fighters luck! Freddie will not live that much longer! eventually his parkinsons will get worse and he will be wearing diapers and have alstheimers. very sad because Freddie is the man!

You're absolutely right. For a push/pull sport like mma or wrestling strength conditioning is mandatory. Explosive strength is very important.

Kind of what I was thinking. I can see where it would help in boxing, but not nearly as much as it would in a sport like MMA. Lifting big =/= big punching power. (I could be wrong, as I've never trained for boxing)

I agree that same sport strength and conditioning program are mandatory : American Football is a premier  exemple.
But in sport like boxing I feel exactly like Freddie Roach, they are not necessary. I would add also that they are counterproductive because bulking muscle will eventually slow down the speed of of boxer. Old timer boxing trainer were very much against weight training because of that and the only strenght training allowed was push ups and chin ups.
The best boxers in history Ray Sugar Robinson and Ali never requaired strenght and conditioning coach!!!
And even today there are plenty of elite boxers who do not use strenght and conditioning coach : Flolyd Mayweather Jr. is also an exemple.
But returning to the other question of the discussion : are this conditioning and strenght coach drug supplier and specialist on passing drug test in boxing match ? ? ? ???
I mean boxers started testing positive for steroids with the advent of this overrated strenght and conditioning coach!!!

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. Big strength doesn't necessarily make you hit substantially harder. I can see that there may be benefits, but not as in other sports. Thats what I was trying to get at.

Part of the reason boxers are testing positive is that they are testing harder now too. You'll see a decent number of positives before say the last decade, but it just wasn't seen as a big problem. Now it is, it's sort of like baseball in the late 90's.

the only way to progress is to keep adding higher and higher doses of hormones

the limiting factor is organ capacity and dollars
