Best OS in your opinon?
« on: December 03, 2012, 10:05:27 AM »
Which operating system is the most no-nonsense, lightweight and efficient of them all today? I hate unnecessary features and applications and faggy graphics.

Windows 8 seems to be a major suck job.

still using xp sp3 on two of my three computers at home. Nothing they made after was better than this anyway.

they force you to upgrade your OS to benefit from the new Direct X routines for video games, but im pretty sure you could use the last DX routine on xp if they wanted to...it's just in order to sell they force the consumer to upgrade, this is pointless, XP does everything 99.99% of what the average and tech expert person need to do with their computer or tablet/smart phone.

You cant know anything about computers and software if you claim XP sp3 is equal to Windows 7.

The only thing I do is download and watch movies, surf the net and minor document work like writing a CV. Maybe some photoshop.

No gaming whatsoever.

www.archlinux.org

1 more stable than debian or other linux with latest debugged kernel code

2 as fast and easy to compile programs on

3 easier to update than ubuntto debian or bsd or solaris

4 easier to install software than freebsd or netbsd or solaris

until plan9 from bell labs gets a nice user interface or forthOS gets a nice GUI browser archlinux is the greatest and has won the admin award 5 years running

We use CentOS at work, I like it, it's solid, never crashes, and it handles the tons of data we output.

For home use, Windows 7 hands down.

no-nonsense depends on how familiar you are with computers

lightweight depends on the spec of your computer

efficient depends on what you do with your computer

When I was in college I used Ubuntu (linux distro). It was great! I could do all the admin stuff via shell as well as just be a power user because the GUI is very similar to Windows.
Another up side to Ubuntu is the great support community around it, I have never ran into a problem that hasn't already been solved with a full solution on the Ubuntu forums.
You can even try it out by running the live-cd to see if you like it before you install it. You can install it along-side your Windows OS, so you can switch back and forth in case that is something you want. All apps are free and open source. GIMP is just as good as photoshop and works in a very similar way. VLC works like a charm. It even has some impressive games you can run on it.
You can download the ISO or order a free cd they send in the mail.

Hope this helps

Sure.

I'm very familiar but would like something effortless. Only basic usage, mostly on the web, listening to music or watching movies. The specs are basic. I don't need anything special for my usage.

I'd give Windows 8 a chance. From what I've been reading (and my own experience)..everyone thinks it sucks at first, but once they learn the new way of doing things, people really like it.

I'm not knocking Linux, I would just go the Windows route due to its widespread adoption and ease of finding information to resolve issues.
The answer is "yes".

Yes, it makes sense. IMHO, that's another reason to give Windows 8 some consideration.

OpenBSD is interesting. Just never heard about anyone using it.

I use it for work in a lab for an external Firewall, it runs PF (packet filter) on OpenBSD.
Good, free stuff... Most linux is fine, people just seem to have their favorite flavors..
