Just got back from my first "black funeral"
« on: December 15, 2012, 12:35:07 PM »
A buddy of mine passed away from cancer, and it was at a black church. Man, was it different than any funeral I've been to. It's weird, you realize the difference culturally between people in this country, even though we're still all the same nationality. I will admit though, at the end, it was like an episode of South Park, where it takes a turn and has nothing to do with the person who died, but all about Jesus. Anyway, aside from that, there were things being said, such as "you may have had bullets go by your ear, but you alive" or " you may have been big pimpin, but the lawd can take you at any time" and a lot of hallelujah and what not, it was a good service. It seemed to be more upbeat than a "white funeral", but maybe that's because most funerals I've been to we're old people, and this dude was 34. Anyway, any thoughts or experiences from members?

Any mention of Jesus at my funeral - apart from saying something like "Yo, this brotha was most certainly the latter-day Black Jesus" - and I'll put a curse on everyone present.

Most funerals that I've been to have taken a turn toward being all about Jesus.  These were southern white baptist funerals.

Hispanic funerals always end up turning into a big ass party at one of the cousins house.  Few fights here and there nothing out of the ordinary.

Did you alter your accent and speaking cadence when around the blacks or did you stay white?  Just curious.

No, only time I spoke was when I left I told his mom he was a good dude and I enjoyed knowing him. I wasn't sure that they weren't just acting this way to fuck with the few white folks there.

I find the way black people talk rather fascinating.  Its still a hold-over from the slave days.  If you ever meet truly southern blacks, that have never altered the slave dialect one iota, it can become quite difficult to understand them at all.  Its very unique and worth preserving.  It is still prevalent though it large amounts within most black people no matter where they are from, just not as much.

Being from Carolina, have you ever been to Lumberton and spoke to some of those people? I did some work for a company from there, and I would have to process what they said before answering.

Depends, Jehovah's Witness' funerals regardless of race are quick and over before you know it. Many baptist--southern, it depends on the pastor, is he trying to evoke a serious tone, or rile the people up. Also depends on the person as well. If the deceased didn't have much in the way of accomplishments, or was an eff up, then the pastor

has to come up with some "fluff" and that Jesus aspect is really pushed.

And then there is the obligatory food at the family's or friend's house afterward.

Of course.  One of my best friends is a Lumbee Indian. His mother never learned to read or write, but was the sweetest woman you would ever want to meet.  He grew up without any shoes, running water or anything and ended up starting his own home improvement business and has made a ton of money.

If you want a really fascinating dialect, its the Tidewater and or Piedmont Planter accent.  Northern North Carolina and Southern Virginia.  This is the old Aristocratic Southern accent and what Thomas Jefferson would have sounded like and Robert E. Lee.  Its very prevalent here and its my favorite accent by far.  Of course I am biased to it because I speak it.  8)  I talked to Johnny Falcon on Xbox Live a few times and he thought I was from England. haha

Be very careful in Lumberton.  Lumbee, are a violent people and will knife you in the back and not think twice.  Their DNA is hardwired with a propensity for violence and some are able to combat it, but most arent.

My friend who I mentioned earlier is one of three brothers.  One was murdered and the other is constantly in and out of Prison for fighting, stabbing etc...  He was the only one that made it.

pretty cool adonis

thats why i sometimes act a neegul falcons when dealing with afro amercians, cause i know they wont appreciate proper white folk english, im not exactly convinced the old dialect is worth preserving except only for its ability to capture the imagination

theres alot of dull pronounciations and words that can sound the same that would be indistinguishable, wich leads to the ultimate question, could blacks in these times truly understand what each other was saying, or was there some sort of psychic connection involved that allowed for proper discernment among dialect between afro american of that past time

Is his last name Nance or Locklear? Everyone I have met from there has one of those two last names. And yes, being from Virginia, I am familiar with the accent. It is prevalent in Charlottesville and also with some folks I know from belvedere North Carolina as well. What area are you from in Nc?

He is a Lowery on his mother`s side, but his brother married a Locklear.  A lot of Oxendine`s also.

I've never been to a black funeral, but I've been to a lot of church services in various states.  They go on FOREVER.  Hours!  There's always a lot of shouting and "praise the Lord".  Always a lot of "passion" from the preacher.  The women dress to the nines.  The music is usually fantastic.

Awesome rendition here!
Her voice is effortless.

Quite fitting as I'm sure you'll be on your way to hell.
