Since the Doors don't count (more a 60's band), I vote for the Stooges. But the question is hard to answer since the best rock bands weren't in America at this time. Never was a fan of the Eagles, Aerosmith, etc.

CCR was great, but they were mostly a 60's band

Grand Funk was pretty damn tight too

there were so many great bands at that time its hard to pick just one. I will say though that everyone I knew had this particular album any you could hear this song on the radio just about everyday, almost 30 years later and it is still a great song.

I'll give the nod to the Eagles also for a few reasons. Longevity, I like the music ( hard to take this out of the equation), and sound quality in concert regardless of the venue. Be it indoor sports arenas or outdoors, they and the sound crew, somehow managed to make it sound album quality or very close. I cannot say this about most bands I've seen over the years.

The amount of anthem/classic songs they made which are used in school events, sports events, movies, TV, etc is more than any other group i can think of.

I don`t know the answer to this question, but what I do know is that Grandpa used to keep old pepsi bottles in the wood shed which he would fill with water and then use an old phillips head to tap out childrens lullabys.

Grandpa had perfect pitch.  He attributed this to countless hours of bugle blowing, practicing for the Christmas parade each year.  I don`t recall how many octaves but he could hit all the high notes.
