Are 3D tvs any good?

They are OK, but I wouldn't go below 60 inches.

I have the Samsung model that is HD 3D, you can watch nearly any program with the glasses.  However, they enhance the view about 10-20%.  Not truly a 3D experience.  You still need to have a 3D DVD to get true 3D quality.

You will get the sensation that there is depth - but not so much that something is popping out at you like you would at 3D movie theaters!


Go see it for yourself!  I wouldn't buy one now though, I would just get a regular HDTV.  Eventually there will be glasses-free ones, but still a while for those and they won't be cheap!

At one time 3D movies were a great experience because they were filmed so that every few minutes something on the screen hopped out at you or poked you in the eye.

Bwana Devil was the first full length 3D movie shown in theaters and the audience really went 'bananas' when the lion hopped off the screen and when a native's spear poked them in the  eyeball.

And the House of Wax came along with Charles Bronson and Vincent Price and it actually felt like the  theater was on fire.

And in another long forgotten 3D movie the hero pursues the villain while riding on a roller coaster and that sequence got some 3D fans in the audience suffering from motion sickness.

And then everyone screamed a lot when some Creature From the Black Lagoon attempted to grab the 3D viewers in the front row.

But the best 3D of the best 3D was a long forgotten Popeye animated 3D cartoon where his 'flying saucer' actually appeared to fly directly over our heads while audience hands reached up to grab it.

I just saw The Hobbit in the iMax 3D format and within five minutes the 3D effect was forgotten and my two-dimensional brain saw it all in 'flatness'.

Those original 3D movies were made to excite the audience every couple of minutes but today's 3D efforts are not worth the efforts that it takes to produce them.

Somehow along the way 3D sorta flattened out.

But I did enjoy watching a TV football game in 3D and those 3D games on a large screen are very impressive

i thinking of upgrading my projector to the new Panasonic pt-ae8000 but i have yet to see it perform in person, most 3D LCD tvs i see i the store have a 3D image that falls behind the screen , where as the Projector im hoping to get the same feeling as in the theaters where the picture appears to be floating in front of you

This is exactly what I was referring to.  All the new 3D TV's will give an effect of depth but will not give the effect of something popping out at you like at the theaters!

I just bought a 60" LG plasma 3d tv. It is incredible and was only $1200. The picture on the plasma destroys led tvs. There is no "smear" watching football. It is 600htz so the refresh rate is fabulous. The 3d movies are awesome. It was well worth the money. I have 4 pairs of glasses. My kids stand in front of the tv and try to grab the images.

Plasma will always have a better image than LCD - The technologies has definitely improved, but it sucks if you have a room that gets in a lot of light and the image gets washed out.

Gdammit!  Opened this thread hoping to see a story about how grandpa used to make u n ur brother do exactly the same movements except u would have to be close and your brother far away as your gramps ate popcorn and watched. But alas I guess your fond memories have run their course.
