He initially joined nation of islam, which is not islam at all, then through some guidance and self exploration he has embraced true Islam. In one of his interviews he mentions he tries to not advertise it too much as he is weak and may not represent this beautiful thing that is Islam as he said himself, however he has indeed changed alot from his broken upbringing and involvement with corruption of boxing... boxing indeed is filled with corruption its all about gangs, money, etc... it's not just 'fighting' on stage as its seen on tv.

He's had a rough life from the very start for sure. May Allah (swt) guide him and forgive him. Ameen.

I had a buddy who joined the nation of Islam once said it was crazy and there were Talks of spaceships coming from the skies with aliens, then he became a normal Muslim, then he stopped believing all together lol
