have you ever stuck to a low rep routine?
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:59:43 AM »
Someone once mentioned that sets were invented because in the beginning guys would lift some thing they could only handle for 2 reps and once they could do 4 they upped the weight.  One set seemed not working hard so they did 3 or 5 etc.

Anyone here ever stick to such a workout for 6 months?

i did low reps for years

not much difference with high rep

just more temporary cns induced strength and more risk of injury

Reg Park trained using 5 sets of 5 reps, you can google the "Reg Park 5x5 system".  Arnold used it as well...

We rarely go above 5 reps.

Nah.  I'm a low volume kind of guy, so I tend to do at least six reps per set, and usually 10+.  For a time I did actually focus on the 3-5 rep range, but one or two such sets to failure didn't work very well.  I should've avoided failure and done more sets with a slightly lighter weight, a'la 5x5 routines.

well i think it may be safer

you get more strength gains out of low rep because neurological things

but ultimately muscle size is more about steroids and training style does not matter so much so just take the safest way

I like low reps training but only on the "big" exercises, smaller muscle groups too heavy = injury, been there!

according to AJ rep range should be stay the range of 6-20 reps

he usually choose 8-12 reps for upper body and 15-20 reps for lower body

Mentzer usually suggested 5-8 or 6-10 for upper and 8-15 or 12-20 for lower

not sure what Ms. Rand suggested though
