It is great way to control the masses. If you can control how people think, you control how they act .
Most religions cause people to feel guilty over sexy aka lustful thoughts.
If you can make someone feel guilty over their own natural , normal thoughts, you start to control how they think.

I was with a couple of people in "verwaltungsgericht Lüneburg" about 6 weeks ago and the Judge was really giving me dirty looks because we help people fight against the Nazi Authorities here. King Louis XVI of France was a staunch catholic.  The revolutionaries tried to get him to renounce his faith, and he would not.  It played a major role in his eventual death - beheaded by the revolutionaries.  Had he publicly renounced his faith they would have gone easier on him and probably let him live.

It follows that if "religion is the opiate of the masses" and that a majority of people believe in one religion or the other...

..and you are trying to acheive power and/or wealth over these masses...

Then doesn't it make sense that one would profess to follow a certain religion in order to be accepted by the masses?

In short, I think powerful people say they are religious in order to get votes.

The powerful know they need to embrace religion to control the masses. Period. They may or may not believe it themselves but they all know it is a tool.
