I've been doing these a short while now, I feel it in my abs and have noticed improvement there, I don't train them directly either.

I remember speaking to George Helmer on the Dog and Bone(phone) about Steve Reeves, he runs the Steve Reeves society and knew Reeves. He said he rarely did direct ab training but did tense his abs hard on the push downs. He was a genetic marvel and i think he ate as correctly as you could for the time. Agree though really hits your midsection with concentration.
