Why I, a liberal jew, am a newly-minted member of NRA
« on: January 20, 2013, 05:37:22 PM »
Great article. I wanna hug the common sense out of this guy.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2013/01/15/why-am-newly-minted-member-nra/

Over 250,000 Americans have joined the NRA since the Sandy Hook tragedy in December. I am one of them.
Why did all these folks decide to sign up?
Well probably for the same reasons I did. At first glance, I’m not your typical NRA member. I’m Jewish, Ivy League educated (Columbia University, Class of ’83, President Obama’s classmate in fact), and have even been a member of the mainstream media (I started my career as an anchorman and host for CNBC, then called the Financial News Network).

I'm not the world's biggest gun guy. I'm not a collector. Being around guns is not second nature for me.
I’m not your typical NRA member. I’m Jewish, Ivy League educated and have even been a member of the mainstream media
But I want them to be legal. I want the right to own them. I want the right to protect myself and my family.
I want to protect the Second Amendment.
And I don't want government telling me what to do. And if any of those rights are going to be threatened, then I realized it's time for me to stand up for the NRA.

Here are more common sense reasons why I decided to join the NRA:

First, I believe it’s clear that our politicians have come to all the wrong conclusions. Why would we rush to ban guns, when almost all of our worst mass murders and most of our violent crimes occur in places with the strictest gun control? Why rush to create more “Gun Free Zones” when the Sandy Hook tragedy occurred in a “Gun Free Zone?” This response makes absolutely no sense.

The worst violent crime and murder rates in America occur in places with the strictest gun control already in place: Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C.
Strict gun control clearly does not work. It only disarms the honest, law-abiding citizens, who are left helpless and defenseless. Criminals never have a problem acquiring guns. Therefore gun laws are not only useless, they are dangerous.

But don’t just look at big cities in America. Let’s look across the Atlantic Ocean for the best example. Our friend and ally England has a complete ban on guns. No citizen of the UK can carry a gun. Period. Not a one.

Result? The violent crime rate in the UK is three and a third times higher than it is in America. The FBI reports 386 violent crimes per 100,000 in the USA. The UK Home Office reports 1,361 violent crimes per 100,000 in England.  Gun control may be a failure, but the UK experience proves that outright gun bans are an unmitigated disaster.

But this is nothing new. Leftist, big government, Nanny State politicians always come to the wrong conclusion about most issues.

Groucho Marx said it best:

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying all the wrong remedies.”

Former White House chief of staff and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel put it differently, “Never let a crisis go to waste.” Our leftist big government politicians are trying to turn a terrible tragedy into a gun crisis. Their solution is to try to demonize and ban guns. But the Newtown tragedy wasn’t a gun problem, it was a mental illness problem.
Thank goodness the American public has more common sense than the politicians and media big shots. A recent Rasmussen poll shows that while 27% think stricter gun control laws are the solution, a dominant 48% believe the answer is more action to treat mental health issues.

It is obvious that many Americans agree that guns do much more than kill (in the wrong hands). More often than not, they save lives and prevent violence.

Here are a few proven facts that are too often missing from the gun debate (Thanks to Gun Owners of America and ZeroHedge.com for these statistics):

Based on a 2000 study, Americans use guns to defend themselves from crime and violence 989,883 times annually. Banning guns would leave about 1,000,000 Americans defenseless from criminals who have no problem acquiring guns illegally.

A nationwide survey reported over a five-year period 3.5% of households had a member who used a gun to protect themselves, their family, or their property. This also adds up to about the same 1,000,000 incidents annually.

Each year about 200,000 women use a gun to defend themselves from a sexual crime or abuse.

The Carter Justice Department found that of more than 32,000 attempted rapes, 32% were actually committed. But when a woman was armed with a gun or knife, only 3% of the attempted rapes were actually successful. More recent studies all point towards a figure of 2.5 million -- that’s the new expert guesstimate of how many times Americans defend themselves from violent criminals each year.
Bottom line: guns save lives.

Now that we’ve polled the citizens, how about we see what the felons have to say:

- A survey of male felons in 11 state prisons across the USA found that 34% had been scared off, wounded or captured by an armed victim of their crime.

- 69% of felons knew other fellow criminals who had been scared off or captured by an armed victim.

- 57% of felons polled agreed that "criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running into the police."

These facts (and many more too voluminous to show here) prove that guns -- in the right hands -- defend citizens, families and children.
Again, guns save lives.

But for me, it’s always been a personal and emotional argument, even more than a factual one. I’m a proud Jewish American. Over six million of my fellow Jews were enslaved, starved, tortured, and then slaughtered by Adolph Hitler. Before it could happen, in 1938, Hitler banned gun ownership for Jews.

The reality is that throughout history, the first thing all tyrants do is disarm the citizens. Then the mass killings begin.

In the end we all have to remember our Second Amendment was not put in place to protect us from criminals and random crime. It was put in place to protect the citizens from government.

Thomas Jefferson put it best: "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”
I’ll be glad to give up my guns when the elites in Washington and Hollywood agree to disarm their bodyguards. And when President Obama stops sending his daughters to the exclusive Sidwell Friends School, which has a 9-person armed security force.
For all of these reasons, that's why now more than ever, we need to protect the second amendment. That's why now more than ever, we need the NRA.

Here’s a List of People Injured or Killed by Guns on ‘Gun Appreciation Day’
Robert Kessler

Yesterday was deemed a day to appreciate your guns in America, and boy did we. Five people were shot at gun shows in North Carolina, Ohio and Indiana. These were not, however, the only instances of gun violence yesterday.

As happens everyday, numerous people were either injured or killed by guns on "Gun Appreciation Day," be it on purpose or accidentally. Spanning Alaska to Florida, here are those people:

A 14-year-old suburban Atlanta boy shot and killed his 15-year-old brother while playing with their mother's handgun.
A 26 year old was shot and killed while driving in San Francisco.
A man was found dead from a gunshot wound in his home in Kansas City, Kansas.
A woman in an El Paso County, Texas shooting range was hit in the knee by a bullet that ricocheted off a trash can.
Two women were shot to death in a Dallas-area home.
Two women were injured after someone opened fire at a crowded soccer field in Las Vegas.
A 15-year-old girl was shot while sleeping in her bed when her Anchorage home was shot at.
A 7-year-old boy in Tallahassee shot a 5 year old with a gun he found in a 22-year-old relative's room.
A Huntsville woman shot her boyfriend after the two had an argument.
A 23-year-old man died after being accidentally shot in a Greshman, Oregon home.
A Cleveland father has been charged in connection with the death of his 6-year-old daughter from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
One man was shot in Elyria, Ohio, just west of Cleveland, early Saturday morning.
A man was found shot dead in a parking lot in Greenville County, South Carolina.
Two people were shot and killed outside an inn in Hampton, Virginia.
At least 10 people were shot in Chicago, at least two were fatal.
A Colorado Springs man was driven to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
A Jackson, Mississippi police officer was shot while responding to a disturbance call.
One man was shot at a Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Jackson.
Two men and one woman were shot at a home in Oakland.
An 11-year-old boy was shot in an Oklahoma City apartment complex.
Police in Richmond, Virginia are looking for three men who shot another man in his thirties.
Police believe gang violence is to blame for the shooting death of one man in Santa Ana, California.
An early morning shooting in Tuscaloosa injured two teenagers.

Alex,
For those of us raised around guns and those of us with existing common sense on this issue, its nice to see some of our most basic points put in print and put out there for the masses to read.

I arrived at many of this guys statements on my own, as a teenager and an adult...They are just that, common sense. Gun laws are purely meant to appease those on the anti-gun side as a "hey, look, we did something". They've have, and will continue to do nothing but harass registered gun owners. They will do nothing to make us all "safer".
The real enemy is the government with their allowance of brain altering pharmaceuticals that takes existing mental problems to the next level of homicide.

So maybe to change the direction of the thread a little, can you fill in the spaces there where your views were before this revelation? ie, Did you think criminals abide by existing laws and are always punished severely for breaking them? Did you think your average gun owner was a careless racist who drove around town with a loaded firearm in their car all the time? Who is supposed to defend you? Dare I ask, did you think the police would be there to protect you, or just anyone thats a victim of crime?  Dont take offense here.. I'm just really curious to know how the liberal minded person floats so high above the epicenter of the facts before they change. Or was it that you just never REALLY thought about it?

I dont know anyone on a personal level that has outright illogical beliefs on this. One guy I'm acquainted with said, "in a perfect world, only police and fire would have guns".. I just scoffed and shook my head as I know this guys is usually drunk by 10am everyday.. So he doesnt count. But a lot of people do think that.

Right to life = Right to defend yourself.  Without citizens being allowed to own guns, essentially, the govt could at any time trample all over the first 4 amendments of the constitution.

Welcome to the club. Dont forget to put your NRA sticker on your car.

Does anyone have the numbers on how many people were injured or killed in automobile accidents on the same day as gun appreciation day? I'd like to see a comparison on what is more dangerous for society.
